So...will an 8 or 9 speed do or does it have to be a 'single speed' chain?
Running a spare 9spd Ultegra chain on mine - seems fine.
Depends on your chainline...
I've a slightly dodgy one on the Pompino with the Alfine crank and the whipperman anti rust SS 1/8th chain has chewed the bash/trouser guard thing a bit on the inside.
The 456 with a on-one bashguard is grand with the same chain after 2.5 years of not washing and lubing occasionally.
I found a 1/8" "Singlespeed" chain was too wide for the cog on an Alfine to be ideal, and too intolerant of imperfect chainline, and it kept getting thrown off!
I swapped it out for a cheap 8spd KMC chain, and had no such problems... IMO just use the cheapest 8spd chain you can get hold of, and run one of those...
Thanks!!
It's unusual that something can accept 3/32 and 1/8 chains
