Need to fit some new ones and only have experience of Hayes 9's (Alligator and disco brakes).

Which are the best ones to get?

I find the Avid ones are expensive and dont last more than 2 3 hour rides.

Goodridge Sintered. Great in all conditions and last ages.

Dimmadan You need to bed them inproperly then. They appear to be one make of pad that requires more bedding in than others.

Or get hopes? A pair of pads lasts thousands of miles

Jeremy, they have been bedded in correctly but recent trips to Afan and Cwmcarn (both venues known for it's dust and high brake usage) has ripped them to pieces.

Dimmadam - this is a continuing debate. Some folks seem to be able to ride those places without premature pad wear. There is at least one other factor at work apart from the conditions. I suspect heat in the brakes is a big part of it. Try smaller discs?

People get very het up about this but No way would I accept 50 miles as satisfactory life. One day I'll go to afan it the wet to prove to folk that its not simply the conditions.

As I said folk on here claim to get good milage even riding there in the winter

I have to say that the brakes are squeeking a bit.
