MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
.. as I've heard the current Phantoms material is not as good as my ageing original.
Endura Convert? Pearl Isumi Elite?
Er bump? C'mon half of STW wear a softshell, whats your review of what you are wearing...?
I use a new gore phantom, but i never had the old one so i don't know how the material compares. For me, its the best jacket out there, use it all year round for commuting and proper riding in temps of -12 up to 12, raing, hail or snow. I have Endura convert, but whilst its a better waterproof, it doesn't breath very well.
Shouldn't you be training hard for your sportive rather than ruminating over softshell choices? You only have a matter of days to get proper fast. Did Rocky sit on the internet asking what boxing shorts to buy? 😉
BWD - Bike's still in the shop, therefore I'm [s]resting [/s]tapering...
I love my Crane Sports soft shell...but they fly off the shelves when they go on limited release sale, so you have to be canny and quick to get one. Collector's items they are.
I've just replaced the one I didn't have in the first place with a Gore Phantom. 😥
Its first outing was a weekend of snow, ice and a wind that would cut you in half in Afan and Cwmcarn. I can report that the current Phantom is pretty toasty.
I'll let you know how it performs in more typical, changeable conditions if the new Ice Age ever ends.

You can taper after the event when it doesn't matter. Get out there and run in the snow, that's what Rocky would do. There's still time!
Btw, is your sportive being televised live?
montane dyno
ive an older one and its great for everything up to 'torrential' rain.
comfy, warm, breathable, hood option
im in the market for something similar this year after my missus has taken a liking to the dyno as a great windproof.
I still have a couple of N2S Phantoms and they are simply ace. I've also used a new softshell Phantom and I agree that they aren't as good, and a different cut too - more beer belly cut...? (the Oxygen SO is cut more like the older N2S Phantom).
I've got both, and old knackered one and a new one, they work the same but the old one feels nicer. I haven't snagged the new one as much as the older one. (may be luck)
Oh, and not cycling specific, but Rab's Vapour-Rise Lite stuff is good. Very breathable and wicks and dries really well. Much more breathable than Windstopper, but also less wind and water resistant, it depends on your priorities really.
I find Windstopper good on the road where output tends to be steady, but less clever off-road where you make lots of short, intense efforts and get really hot very fast.

Well, the LBS called and I sneakily asked the Mrs to drop me up there in my bike clothes and I rode back - theoretically in TT mode but realistically with a headwind and roadworks average 17.2mph :-/
Televised? No its a local club Easter Classic organised the BC.org
Rapha softshell is a fantastic bit of kit.

A bargain at £240....
Which zone were you in? I'm mostly in Zone 2, but only because it means cheaper tube travel.

i have 2 dare 2b softshells, the £25 hoody one which does lovely for dh and some windstopper one i got in the 1/2price sale (when isn't there a sale!) and its a fantastic bit of kit for £40...
montane dyno also excellent.
Just order a new Phantom from Wiggle and if you don't like it send it back for free?
For what it's worth, I've got a Phantom and really like it, I've also got an Alp X SO which is probably slightly better as it's slightly thinner.

Sorry I didn't see a budget specified in your original post.
I have a 15% off code if you want to use it.
pearl izumi, PRO softshell, bloody lovely. not for -ve temps though unless you wear a think merino, otherwise great waterproofness and breathability.

PMSL!!! [s]Sta[/s], er, Kryton; you worry too much, bud. 😀
The Convert is great, btw but I just ride (as opposed to train/taper/fret)
😉
