Or is it just a case of phils face doesnt fit the picture to smash this record ?
I'll have you know Phil is one of the least ugly JMC riders... ๐ ๐
I dont dispute that but with competition from you and jase its not a hard accolade to have ๐
So, it's merely propping him up a little in times of serious need rather than supported.
(In all seriousness though, it must be classed as a "supported" attempt and I don't think anyone worth listening to gives a flying f...)
I agree, to the vast majority of people it's a fantastic time for a hell of a ride.
Personally I find all this talk of rules set by a bunch of Americans the complete opposite of what mountain biking is about.
What a ride from Phil ... outstanding effort on what is one of the hardest mtb challenges this country can offer.
Self supported or supported still a great ride.
Think people need to relax a little about what 5teve is trying to put across in terms of a level playing field for all utilising mostly rules adopted from the US scene ... 5teve himself has an enviable list of completed rides and is just trying to create a database of records.
Terrahawk, along with TwinklyDave, holds the record for the Trans Cambrain Way
You might find that Mark Goldie holds that title with a time of 11 hours 44 minutes.
Ragley supported riders Jason Miles and Dave Powell, of Team JMC-IT recently rode the Trans-Cambrian Way across mid-Wales in a record breaking 9 hrs 51 minutes - the previous record was 12 hrs 25 minutes, so they took over 2 and half hours off - good show!

You sure about that^?
Just checked, WHW is 96 miles one way? And this guy has done it back too?
Holy cow, unsupported or supported in any time let alone less than 30 is amazing, what an achievement!
Well done Phil for finishing the double just half an hour ago and doing most of the ride in the rain and dark.
28hr's 59 mins a new record [bows]

I don't see the harm in distinguishing supported vs. unsupported rides, guys attempting either are hardcore in my eyes.

On a dry day that would've been mighty impressive, but factoring in howling winds and lashing rain on top, he's shown exceptional grit and skill... very well done ๐
What was the final time?
?28hr's 59 mins
Awesomez

You sure about that^?
Yes ...The time of 9h 51m was actual riding time not total time. Their total time was 12H 10m.
Phil, ya big crazy fool ya! Bloody well done!

That's a wee bit lame to use actual riding time instead of total time taken to complete a route.
Does the 28hrs 59mins ^ refer to actual riding time or total time?
Total.
Wow, brilliant. Congrats, that's awesome!
Now that is digging deep. Well done Mr. Simcock. I'm humbled.

He does, out time was a good 20mins longer that that. He holds the record. (We just recorded both the 'riding' and 'elapsed' time cos that's how the original record was noted down)

Steve is a legend and an inspiration, no-one could deny that - I certainly wouldn't, I think what he's achieved is ace. I'm just not sure clutching a list of rules in one hand, a list of rider in the other while telling people off for being 'elitist' is helpful!
Anyway, quibbling aside and back on track HE SMASHED IT.
28hrs 59min
Grinning from ear to ear for the guy ๐
Bloody awesome effort that Phil. 200 miles in those conditions, in that terrain is beyond amazing and out the other side!! Dead chuffed for you. Enjoy the glow that goes with doing something that us mere mortals can only dream about doing.
You smashed it big time!
Well done mate, took me 3 days....... one way! ๐
Wow! Fab achievement fella. ๐
Well done Phil, Hats off Sir ๐
Inspirational stuff!
Bloody hell, I felt entirely justified giving up after twelve hours of that trail in the rain, but 28!! Good job.
Superb achievement. That was not good weather yesterday and today - windy all the time and wet today...
That's a wee bit lame to use actual riding time instead of total time taken to complete a route.
It's text taken from a sponsor's marketing news item and in fairness, the previous record was published by IMBA in the same way.
I think you're trying to pick holes in something for the sake of it really.
Well done for digging out a news item from August 2010 though. Brings back some happy memories.
oh, yes. the actual thread topic.
Just got back home with the Team JMC van, loaded up with all Phil's bike clobber and whatnot. Knackered but happy to have been part of the weekend's epic.
Feel very proud of him now. I know how hard he's trained for this and watching him execute the ride over the last couple of days and make it look easy was a privilege.
Not trying to pick holes in anything for any purpose. Just merely pointing out that if someone was trying to claim a record based on "total moving time" that it could be easily manipulated. But, if that's the way the record was presented initially then fair enough - just seems a strange way to do it.
Hell using that method I reckon I'd be able to beat the new record WHW X2 set over the weekend. The total ride time including stops would probably be around the 5 years mark though.
Has he any thoughts on how much less time it would be possible for him to do it in given more favourable conditions?
Has he any thoughts on how much less time it would be possible for him to do it in given more favourable conditions?
At the moment he only has thoughts on how much food he's going to eat over the next few weeks.
Doing it on a 29er is cheating ๐
Obviously!
Fewer rotations of the wheel and all that.
Hell using that method I reckon I'd be able to beat the new record WHW X2 set over the weekend.
๐ a couple of flat out hours a day would do the job
bigjim - i'm thinking 50m/day with flying start.
Congratulations to Phil - I shall pass on the news to previous record holders!

Van? sounds like your journey home was fully supported pfft! ๐
Stunning, simply stunning. Well done. To Phil and his 'supporters'
Awesome, nice work Phil and crew ๐
Superb effort - esp given conditions.
Fantastic! Really well done Phil Simcock. It brings the whole sub 24hr potentials back into play for discussion (and despite what others might like to think or feel - for me it's a really exciting part and love of the ongoing MTB story for the UK (1985-2012 onwards) - it's a brilliant ride and a brilliant challenge that pushes the whole eqpt+person mix to the max). Supported attempts on this route are not particularly faster, as proven by Rob Lee and Rich Rothwell, who despite being great riders, bailed on the return legs and that will have been heart-wrenching, (I'm not sure if Shaggy's (unsupported?) ride was intending to turn round at Fort Bill). I think it's because; 1) time is lost with every meet-up with a support team (bike, mechs, apparel, food, etc) and 2) that the comfort/bail-out blanket is near, and lastly 3) you can become reliant on the support crew to the extent that when something untoward happens, it's a cue to bail rather than tough-it-out - e.g. that at the time you feel that it would be unsafe to continue, which is a fair call, but one that you have less option to adopt if you are unsupported. What Phil (+ bike choice) has achieved here is astronomically brilliant, especially as the conditions were far from favourable, and with less daylight hours. I got the news of the attempt whilst working on www.scotlandcoasttocoast.com which coincidentally uses the WHW between Glen Nevis and Lairig Mor ruin, and had several hundred participants (run/trek) over the two daylight afternoons on this same weekend just gone. Now that would of been a mental headline..... 'WHW Double dreams shattered by the trail blockage caused by 1,000 Coast To Coast runners on the trail - an event created by the previous WHW Double record holder!' WRT the exclamations on level of support, I'll save that for another posting later - perhaps further down this thread. In truth, it's an uber-niche argument that I don't care for. Anyone completing this kind of ride does so because they love enduarnce MTBing, and whether they have mates or sponsors in tow, so what. Just enjoy it, and then sit back and revel in what you've all achieved. Personally, I find it empowering, and I get a vicarious thrill off reading about it all, that pushes me on to discover new challenges too. Step up Mike Hall in 2013?
Gary T
p.s.I don't know who Daisy Duke is - Kate Potter? - a brave solo attempt and well done to her too.
As Brant just said on Twitter..I also did the WHW once, one way, over 3 days. But there and back in one go? In that time? In those conditions?
Like...WOW.
A stunning achievement.
