I have a 8 speed Tiagra short cage mech, cassette and flat bar shifter lying around and was wondering what chainring size would you need to run a useable range of gears?

If such a thing is even possible?

Just thinking out loud really ๐Ÿ™‚

Yes - depends on cassette size.

Intended use is local hacking around the woods type stuff which means no big climbs, all pretty flat stuff.

Pretty sure cassette range is 11-25 but will have to double check that.

I was hoping i might be able to use a Middleburn Uno set-up.

I use 12-27 with a 38t ring on my cx bike and is a good compromise. sometimes wish for higher and lower gears but 38t for me is pretty much in the middle

because it's a road cassette and mech the biggest sprocket size would only be a 27 at the most I'd guess

this gear calc (or the one on the sheldon brown website) will give you an idea of what useable range you'll get, most people use a 32 (middle ring) for 1x9 or 1x8 but they have 32 or 34 at the back

it all depends on the worst hill that you'll need to clear, for mucho cheapness I'd say get an ebay crankset and just use the middle ring to try out the ratio's then you've not lost anything if you need to go lower

I run a road block on both my XC bikes, 12-27 Dura-Ace, with 24/32/44 at the front, great set--up, nice close ratios. Middle ring is perfectly adequate most of the time, use the biggy a fair bit but you can do away with it if just hacking around the woods. Very rarely need the granny, think I've used it about three time this season and that was a silly steep hill in the closing stages of a 24hr.
