Been really impressed with a Gore Active Shell I got off wiggle, never could tolerate shells for riding in the past but I love this one, find myself reaching for it more and more with just base layer underneath - CRC or Wiggle has a few similar ones on sale lately

Tredz have the Endura Convert at £50 after the usual £5 discount and topcashback. I've had mine for many years and it's fab.

Good to know - who did you contact whne you crashed?

That's always my fear with expensive jackets, evan at sale prices.

^^^ the one I sold ? It is a good jacket, light, breathes well, properly waterproof unless a deluge. Only moved it on as I got an MT500 as a gift from my good wife 🙂

If your not going to spend big money - then I'd personally go for a very cheap option - I've noticed that alot of the mid price stuff feels cheap and will probably be a boil in the bag sweat fest - My own take is your berter off getting a warm when wet baselayer and partnering it with a lightweight softshell.

I have the Flux in grey, its a nice jacket, good zips and hood and will keep all but a heavy downpour off. I find it a bit boil in the bag, but I will wear only gloves and t shirt down to 5degrees C so do run hot.

I got mine in a sale and see them in many sales now, think RRP was £120 and I paid £65ish beginning of the year.

Couple from me:

1. Echo the comments on Gore AS - I have an Alp-X shell that has been my goto "filthy weather" jacket for a few years now and it's still as good as it was when I bought it. Not cheap, but worth every penny

2. Endura Stealth 2, if you can still find one in your size. Quite simply, the best jacket I've ever owned and I now live in this for 6 months of the year. It's exceptional and when I've spoken to others that have owned them, they have reported the same. If you only want to own one jacket, this has to be it.

Is that the stretchy softshell like flux super light ? That seemed like a good option but you guys are telling me it's not totally waterproof if it pours down?

Madison roam is a very good winter jacket, a wee bit warmer than I'd usually have, but certainly not boil in the bag warm. Nice long sleeves so no wrist on show, and the warranty is ace.

I'd prefer a removeable hood, but hey ho.

Still wearing a Gore jacket I picked up about 14 years ago. It's still waterproof so hopefully their newer stuff is even better.

Doesn't get a fab review here:

(tl;dr - it's not very waterproof 🙁 )

While we are on it - eldest_oab needs one, it needs to be cheap as he has a habit of crashing and trashing at present... It will also be used for daily paper round so needs reflective bits and bright, while being cool enough for 15 year old (so no lumi yellow...).

Suggestions?

Big fan of my Madison Addict here, but it doesn't fold up small.

Foldable is a few year old Altura Mayhem.

All lurid colours.

I have the mk1 MT500..it is still doing the business ( it has been re-proofed a few times) but is looking a bit tired ..
I really like the look of the mk2 version but at £180..it will have to be a strong hint to santa..

I’m using a Decathlon Forclaz 400 jacket which is an amazing jacket £60 compared to over the 100 mark for the Bike name jackets

if Leisure Lakes still have any of the endura singletrack jackets left, they're excellent value at £60. Worn mine only for two very wet dog walks but definitely lighter/more breathable but just as waterproof as my 3 year old equally good value Altura Attack.

I really wanted one with a hood after the TC and the singletrack ticks all the boxes. See how it goes through the next two seasons but - unlike a few on here - I've had nothing but good experiences with Endure stuff.

I recently got a Craft PB rain jacket to keep in my bag all the time for when I get caught out:
http://www.uttings.co.uk/p118575-craghoppers-performance-bike-rain-jacket-amino-1900684-1800/
Of course the rainy weather paused for the weather to turn nicer as soon as it arrived and since.

Balls I thought the Madison superlight was the answer to my prayers jacket wise. Might have to have a rethink.

Keela..I had forgotten all about that brand ..
I had a waterproof fleece jacket made by that company about 15 years ago which was excellent ( I'm sure it was Keela ..scottish company ..off to check on google)
Yes based in Glenrothes..
Based on previous experience..worth a try ..

2. Endura Stealth 2

You could have mentioned just how dodgy the sizing is! Comes up ludicrously small compared to the stated sizes. Endura say their small is 37"-39" - I'm a 38" but it's a real squeeze.

Just bought an Endura Singletrack on sale. Fits OK (I'm a big guy, the XXL is just right), better than the stealth I used to have, which was a bit snug. The arms are nice and long and there's just enough jacket converting my backside.

Haven't been soaked in it yet, but has handled a couple of showers well. I imagine that water will get in the zips in a downpour, but all jackets wet out eventually. The inner material does make the arms a bit clammy if wearing short sleeves under it, but for £60, I'm not about to start complaining.

#EDIT#

Forgot to mention, rolls up pretty small, surprisingly packable.

Alpinestara all mountain jacket, got it for £50 CRC.
Keeps me nice and dry in the pouring rain. I normally where a soft-shell underneath to work any sweat up.

I have a Goretex 1861 Shake dry and it's an amazing piece of kit. Single layer, extremely breathable and waterproof. However possibly a bit fragile for MTBing and expensive.

However I rode in it for over 70hrs on a recent 9day LEJOG in the most terrible wind/rain and never got wet or sweaty.

Just a shame they only come in matt black. For riding road sections I'd want a brighter option myself, considering it's something you wear in the worst visibility conditions.

For a real back pocket but surprisingly rain proof option (usually for the road bike) the decathlon 'team' rain cape at £30 takes some beating.

If it looks horrid out, I'm in the Gore softshell or going climbing instead.

I have a Neo jacket from Upper Downs that I backed on Kickstarter a while ago.
It's a cracking jacket I have to say but then it's not cheap.
I've got an Endura stealth and a cheaper Altura one but I wear the Neo all the time at the moment.

it's light, fits well, seems to be lasting well and British designed if that means anything to you.

I have one of the slightly odd Columbia Outdry jackets. The looks may not be to everyones taste but in terms of waterproofness it's the best I've had, also breathes well. Apparently, the waterproofing won't wear off either as its the membrane on the outside as opposed to inside with a DWR treatment on the outer face. It's a wee bit crinkly sounding and looks like something a sailor may wear but you know, I'm ok with that. Also you can find em cheap on sportpursuit from time to time

Anything by Patagonia. Amazing jackets but very expensive, but they do last and customer support is first class.

Ok my five/40 jacket turned up and had its first outing at the weekend.

Initially i was looking forward to using it. However about an hour into riding / walking in light rain the jacket was wetted out externally.

its supposed to me a 20k/20k material. would you expect this? I wouldnt...

Got an Altura Attack 360 for what looked like a wet weekend in Scotland. It did rain enough for me to put it on, but not really enough to determine how waterproof it actually was. I did keep it on for the rest of the day though and was impressed with how un-sweaty I was by the end of it despite doing boat loads of climbing, the pit zips work really well. Seems very nicely made, fabric is slightly stretchy which means it feels less "plastic bag" when wearing it.
