[Closed] Want to go on a riding holiday... where, who?

Abroad on a bike for the first time...

I'm fairly fit but borderline/average ability, have a LT hardtail and like my downs/ups/alongs.

I'll be on my own as all my riding mates are [s]old[/s] [s]boring[/s] [s]fall off too much[/s] have too many responsibilities (just kidding guys). Any places do good sharing arrangements for singles or mixes of small groups?

Thinking of September/October... does that limit it?

Where should I go for singletrack bliss? Who should I go with for a chalet/catered type arrangement to meet similar people?

Are Singletrack magazine doing a week away somewhere again this year??

Any suggestions welcome 😀

I'd love a riding holiday - but have the same issues, would love a freeride alps thing...

Can recommend these guys:

http://www.whiteroomchalet.com/sumintro.htm

was there last year and going back this year. Awesome trails, food, location and cake.

You don't have to be a riding God, the riding is only as hard as you want to make it. But it is more than worth it for the views alone. Can be tight and techy, but no shame in walking it if you don't like the look of a section, you'd probably find yourself trying stuff you wouldn't expect. A small sample:

well if you wanted you could join my band of fools going to Germany for a week in July one of the group has dropped out and we have a spare seat in the motor ( tis a VW T5 with 5 seats and ample room for the bikes inside.)

stopping at a friends south of Stuttgard and riding in various places good bunch of guys and various abilitys certainly not racing types or big air guys

would also be quite cheap
but not a week downhilling in the alps

Unfortunately The White Room's season ends before I can go.

Anywhere else for someone who isn't a Downhill God?

trout - cheers for the offer! Serious to accommodate a random in to your group? If the others in your group would be welcoming, I should get myself down to Yorkshire and go riding with you 8)

Ciclo Montana in the Alpujarras in Spain will tick all your boxes... word of warning though: it's addictive! We're going again in October, might meet you there ?

JonT the offer is genuine whilst it wont be the alps and have uplifts I can say it will be excelent . as far as I know the riding will be in the Black forest / Pfzalt / and other random places down there more XC with techy downs than big air time

the riding will be relaxed as I am tail end charlie on the uphills.
the banter will be good and I hope the bier will be ace also

+1 for The White Room. One of their 'Backcountry' weeks would be ideal for you. We went last September and are returning this September.

Van uplift takes care of most of the 'up' and the variety of trails we rode was amazing. Out of the weeks guests 3 had travelled alone and we all got on really well, we're all there to ride bikes after all 😀

Only ever had two MTB holidays [both on my own]. The first with Sierra Cycling [good] and the second with Mountain Biking Spain [brilliant].

The difference [as allways] is the people. BTW the guides use long forked hardtails too. Going back this Autumn.

i can recommend pure mountains in Spain, went there last year and it was amazing, they cater for groups, or singles, really chilled out and amazing riding. didn't see any other riders in the whole week

buy yourself some maps and go ride across the alps.

B&B costs approx. 30€ per night. with food you shouldn't be spending more than 60€ per day.

i'm off in a week or so on my own, but with a tarp, sleeping bag and camping mat. it adds an extra 3.5kg but saves me on the acoomodation.

you don't need a plan as such. just as locals where the good bits are and go ride them.

book a flight to Munich or Innsbruck and a return from Verona or elsewhere on the southern side of the Alps. take your time and ride...

more of an adventure, too.

Sierra Espuna,Spain.Different types of accomodation around the park, and with some you don't need a guide as routes are provided for you.
The Espuna is the best kept secret in Spain.

JonT: If you want to go on your trip after we're closed for the season, then I'd suggest you avoid the Alps and head for Spain or maybe the Pyrenees. We finish up on 25th September because October weather in the Alps can be a bit iffy - it can be great or it can be snowing!

Check out:

Spain (Sierra Nevada): Switchbacks ( http://www.switch-backs.com/)
French Pyrenees: Altitude Adventure ( http://www.altitudeadventure.com/)

We may well head down for a bit of chilled-out riding at one of those locations ourselves once the season is done! Doug (of these parts) place in the Spanish Basque country looks cool too, although I don't have any personal experience.

Looks good could even cure me of my switch back agoraphobia (anxiety about being in a place or situation where escape is difficult or embarrassing)LOL

In September or October the only place to be is Andalucia.
Excellent warm weather then we are based on the coast in Southern Spain.
Great singletrack rides during the day & lively night life on the coast at night. We have plenty of single clients - no surcharges and cost-free individual airport pickups.

If you've got money to burn Utah would be good in October.....

Well presumably it cost more than the Alpes. we went independently so can't recomend a company but it suited us very well

Thanks all for your replies, I have read them all.

I don't have money to burn, but don't want to skimp. I'm single now so want to actually meet with a group/others and go riding with them and a guide, not have to spend so long finding my way around. That and my language skills have evaporated since school 😳

Sierra Nevada was probably the region I had in mind, but thanks for the recommendations.

The White Room's back country trips would just about fit in with my schedule, but might be a bit of a squeeze and there's always next year 😀

Go on...go with the White Room 😀 We're going for their last week as it's a flipping bargin (£350) with only a one evening meal to pay for....and an awesome massage on our day off!!! Most luxurious holiday we've ever had at least.

well, if you could have hung on until nov/dec, one of the projects i'm involved in will be very expensive mountain biking vacations around oudom xai in northern laos.

the area is a little dangerous, both in terms of remoteness if things go wrong (no helicopter rescue for you, young man) and in terms of the many armed groups in the region, but the riding is just un-bloody-believable. well worth the risks, for sure.

so if you have $3000 to spare, plus your return airfare to luang prabang in laos (currently about $1900 return) you can have the experience of a lifetime. and maybe die.

or you could just go riding in the alps instead 🙂

For the last two years we have been with Rivierabike to Molini in the Italian Alps. We have gone as a group but teamed up with individuals that were there or joined us and it made it more interesting for everyone.
Family run hotel in the middle of the village with fantastic food and so all meet in the bar and sit down to eat together. Hotel Chef is a local trailbuilder and so you see him in the hills during the day and then in the evening he comes over to the bar to tell you the food is ready!
Superb variety of flowing to tech trails with great guiding. As much uplift or climbing as you want. We went in September both times and each time the weather was good, shorts and tee shirts and autumnal colours were stunning.
This year trying Austria but having spoken to Jo and Ady at Rivierabike we will probably be going back next year to try something slightly different of theirs.
