Hi all,

Anyone know if it's possible to convert my 5 to a Maxle swingarm as an aftermarket upgrade? Didn't ask for it at build, so what now? Cost? Difficult?

Think its about 500 or something to get a new swingarm - i may be wrong though.

you will need a new swing arm, it isnt possible to convert it. you could convert the QR to a 10mm through axle, some say this stiffens the rear, some say any stiffness gains are negligible .

Try the 10mm axle - thats what I'm going to do when superstar get some red ones back in stock.

i have thought about converting to a 10mm through axle but am not convinced it will make a noticeable difference.

Ignoramus question now - sorry in advance - how's that work then?
Just not sure what the difference is between that and what I've got other than one mm. So the swingarm still has the same dropout and therefore the same capability to 'drop' the axle if I change to 10mm? Just a bit stiffer maybe?
In fact am I being daft - does the Maxle arm mean you've got an axle like the 15QR I have up front? vs the current one which can fall out ?
This is prob daft, so pls help clarify if you can.

I went to the Hadley 10mm rear axle on a 2005 Five. At 16st there was a noticeable different. As good as a Maxle? - don't know I don't have one.

So what does the Hadley do then? Presumably still a QR type arrangement in the std dropouts ? But 10mm instead of 9mm?

Standard QR rear axle is 10mm, 9mm is for front QR. Maxle rear is a similar idea to your QR15, using a 12mm axle, and i'd avoid the Maxle-lite in favour of the older type(or plain bolt through)maxle, the "lite" part comes from sculpting out the middle of the Maxle and leaves the most highly stressed part of the hub axle unsupported, it's something that some hub manufacturers are aware of and trying to sort out at the moment.

scoobmw - the Hadley is a 10mm aluminium bolt, semi-captive nut at one wne and a 6mm allen key fitting at the other. Crank it up and it will go nice and tight. Expensive for a bolt, but simple and it works.

Does it really make much difference anyway? Can't say I ever felt any lack of stiffness from the rear of the Five anyway...

I notice a difference - but then I'm 16st and I take my son on his child seat on the Five sometimes (father, son LOCT seat = 20st give or take).
Even then it's marginal.
