Not really that urgent , the bike is in the stand with a new 32t narrow wide, 11-36 cassette and a zee mech (correct 36 version).

Is there an obvious and fool proof method to set the chain length...I was going to use the old one but that was run with a differant derailleur so it might not be as simple as like for like.

I've read a few places that say chain around biggest sprocket and chain ring plus 2 links?

yep, without threading the chain through the mech though.

This is what I do but with one whole link (ie one outer and one inner)

Or thread it through mech, put on smallest cog and adjust so that jockey wheels are vertically aligned

Weirdly I was about to ask this same question, the only difference being that I have a 11-42t on the back. Let me know how you get on!

Went for two additional links.
Checked first before splitting though, fed it through the rear mech, smallest sprocket and the mark I had made which was the proposed split just about pulled the mech off the stops and got tension in the chain.
Probably could have got away with another link looking at at in the large sprocket but that's something to try another day, after seeing how it goes.

I'd reckon that would be spot on though with a wide ratio cassette.
