Mate has tempted me into joining him in cycling to Glasgow from Musselburgh tomorrow, just wondering if the canal paths are tarmacced all the way? Sure someone told me it had been - wondering whether or not to take roadie bike or hybrid...

The union canal is not for sure - mainly tarmac out to the bypass, gravel thereafter

NOT tarmaced all the way (at least not last year). What sort of tyres on the road bike? I did it on the Sutra with 32C's and that was fine. If the whin dust surface gets wet, it holds lots of water and can be a bit slow.

Been a long time since I rode it, but the F&C is definitely not surface for long stretches and was seriously muddy for long stretches approaching Falkirk (from the west).

skinny skinny road felly's druidh - if there's gravel it'll be puncture-tastic methinks. Hybrid it'll be I think, cheers lads.

Last time I did it, punctureville-central was around Winchburgh
