So the road bike is now on the turbo for the winter (hopefully to still be used outside on nice frosty mornings). Do people remove your good wheels (specifically the front) to run on the turbo? Asking about the front as its basically just going to be loaded in one position for a long time. Rear is an old wheel with turbo tyre for easy swapping anyway.

I use a direct drive trainer personally (got 2 cassettes / 2 chains for the rear of the bike) - it’s never occurred to me to do anything about the front. I can’t see how as long as the front tyre is inflated it would be an issue.

It's not the loading, it's the sweat dripping onto the front hub and seizing the QR...

I now have much better towelage over the front wheel.

Never really thought about it because I just use an old front wheel. I've heard it said you can get a flat spot on the front putting 1000s of miles on it stationary, but don't know if that's bollox or not - if it isn't you could just rotate the wheel every now and again.

On the sweat front I don’t get sweat all over my front wheel - I run one of those sweat catcher things that is stretched between the seat post and the handlebars.

I don’t think any sweat goes further forward than that - even when stood up gurning through intervals.

I'm surprised a stand to replace the front wheel isn't a thing. Although maybe it is - I've never searched.

Kinda like this:

Why have a mere stand when there is the Kickr Climb

I've got a direct drive turbo, but I stick an old wheel with an old crappy tyre on the front, thinking that having the tyre in one spot, grinding against the concrete as I move the bars around a bit, can't do it any good. It may be nonsense, but I have a crappy wheel and a crappy tyre doing nothing else, so it's no hardship.

haha. Only on STW can a thread about if i need to find a second hand front wheel, can result in a suggestion to spend £500 on a new turbo. This is why i like this place!!

Have done approx 10 billion hours on the turbo and not once has any issue with the front wheel become apparent.

Good advice about keeping sweat off your bike though. I just use a towel.

I would wager that's bollox! (Unles the front tyre is resting on 60 grit sand paper and you move around a lot on the turbo, in which case you might wear it away in one spot.

I was more thinking about the risk to my wheel rather than a tyre. I maybe need to stop thinking so much.
