Just for the record, in case anyone else is going to try this.

It looks like a combination of cluelessness, Mavic XC717 rims and Nobby Nics doesn't do ghetto. Probably the first of those.

Tried the 20" tube method, but had a big gap between the tyre and the rim at the valve. Then tried the gorilla tape method. Not terribly tight (with 3 layers of tape) but I also think air is just escaping between the layers of tape where it leaves the valve stem.

Since my ever-loving wife was not totally impressed by the bits of bike gear scattered across the kitchen I now have to give up for the time being. I think this might have been one of those times when she had to choose to love me.....

OK. Made it work at last. So, for the benefit of other people trying the same thing:

Used Joe's rimstrip and 2 layers of duct tape. But I think that was not really the important part. The important part was using a CO2 compressor rather than a track pump. Just popped on instantly.

yep, track pump works with good combos but some just need a quick blast with co2 or a compressor.

With the Getto method use 2 to 3 layers of insulation tape beneath the Getto tube, but only up to 1/2" either side of the valve hole

All seems so much faff compared to just sticking a tube in!!

(I do use UST tubeless tyres on a UST tubless rim on my XC bike as that meets a lot of thorns & I dont want to be changing tubes in mud)

Agree radioman, they have been a faff for me but I've "got it" now in terms of fitting them. I refitted a 2.1 NN to a 355 rim yesterday. Before I did I checked the tyre - and pulled out 6 thorns.

Take a tube with you in case they totally fail on a ride, and you're sorted

Just tried to put my NN on to my new 719 rims using stans rim strips I had to use 6 wraps of insulation tape to get the tyre to fit tightly to the rim

Inflated like a good un
