hi, just after a bit of help please
i have mavic 819 ust, currently running tubeless with stans sealant, however, i have not changed the juice for a while, and the last time it was done by a mechanic. I would like to have a go of this myself....
i know you can get a stans core remover and syringe for about 15 quid for the both...
is that basically all i will need alongside the sealant itself?
so i use the core remover, then insert the syringe and hey presto its sorted? cant be that simples shirley?
🙂
yup but if you have loads old old stuff in it it will dilute is a bit and also add more weight to the wheel - I'd prob remove it , poor the old stuff out and put new in - you would have to part the side wall of the rim to empty it out 🙂
cheers, fairly sure there wont be anything left in, only put a bit in, and iknow ive had a few punctures since then that have magically self healed thanks to stans 🙂
do i have to deflate the tyre first? i really dont want to as i only have a track pump for re-seating the bead and i coudlnt do it last time ended up missing a ride cos i couldnt get it seated back on using the track pump 🙁
i know the air will escape with the valve off, but surely that wont mean that it will lose its seating on the rim?
cheers in advance 🙂
If you simply refill through the valve with the core out the tyre really should not unseat at all.
If you unseat just a small 3-4 inch section of the tyre to clean inside as suggested you should have no problem reseating the bead as most of the tyre will be sealed already and not leak air as you pump like a maniac to reinflate - pop the bead back in:)
I usually remove a section of the bead from rim not to clean up/save a few grammes in weight but just to get an idea of how much milk i need to replace.
HTH
thats brill cheers, didnt think it would un-seat to be honest just straight forward refilling, i shall be having bike serviced soon, so the wheels will be cleaned inside then, i just wanted to make sure i put a bit extra in to cover the punctures ive had already.....
glad it really is as simple as just removing the core and putting some juice in through a syringe 🙂 happy days!!
though no doubt when i attempt it will go tits up and i wont wont be able to re-seat the bead 🙁
if you already have the sealant product i'd personally save the 15 quid and just pop a small section of the bead. I understand your concerns about the pump but it should be fine and you'll be 15 quid to the good. I also had bother with one of the core out/syringes once (joes maybe, cant remember), pouring the desired amount into an unseated section seems simpler (imo) and you get to check the stuff inside
Give the wheel a shake, you should be able to hear if any Stans is left inside.
If you are using a Stans syringe it may not fit your mavic valves. It doesn't fit the ones on my mavic wheels - basically when you remove the core you are just left with a smooth valve and nothing for the end of the syringe to screw onto. Other valves are different and work ok.
It is not that hard to un-seat/re-seat the bead. Only remove one side, and if you wet the bead with some very soapy water you will find it should reseat and inflate very easily with a track pump.
ok guys, thanks for the advice, may well just have a go at undoing one tiny gap of one side then, and pour a bit in.....
to be fair my last attempt i was trying to do it was from a new tyre not seated at all, so at least it should be easier if its partly seated....
ill give it a shot and pray to god it doesnt go wrong and i cant get it reseated on the bead, or i wont be riding at the weekend 🙁 as i have no access to a compressor until special request is made to a friend....
If its any help re-inflating a tyre which is old and "already tubeless ready" i.e. refit is much much easier than a brand new tyre which can be %^&*(&*^% hard work sometimes 😉
