345 sounds good - what sort of price we looking at? How would it be mounted, i fancy a similar idea to the joystick with the threaded disc?
Mebee its not a half trout, its "fillet of trout".
[runs to get coat]
Just to explain a half trout is a light with 3 LED's. I am sure me mentioning this will fill up trouts email with requests for N+1 LEDs in various customs guises. Sorry.
I might be interested as well, but can't afford it for a month or two.
Popped in to see MrT this afternoon and can honestly say these new housings rock and the new clamps finishes them off perfectly.
And thanks for the carpet 8)
You could always offer a shim and longer bolt option on the rare occasion that there is a clearance problem?
Trout, can you give us a measurement from the centre line of the bracket (middle of handlebar) to underside of the lowest part of the bracket.
I'll check my FSA tonight.
Looking good by the way
Nice idea Duggie and one to consider if we get it wrong for the odd stem combo
Monty just got this back from Paul
Hi Chris
To answer 'Monty' The measurement from centre line of bars to underside side
of light is 32mm on your prototype.
We could go to 35mm if you like - I will wait and see what the response is
from the forum.
This is great - Its what you call fluid design by consultation of the
masses.
Cheers
PAUL
34mm at least on a Bontrager Big Earl
No more than 26-27mm on the Thomson X4 with oversize bar (not that it makes any difference)
I`m interested BTW ❗
Chris 32 mm on the FSA fitted to my Marin
yep interested....
Hi Trout,
I'm a bit late to this thread but i'm interested too. YGM.
So, what would a rough ball park figure be for the light, mount and one of smudges battery pack/chargers? I probably cannot afford it but want to know whether it is reachable if i saved for a bit before i head off to DX and get a cheapy light.
Stoney & fannybaws
drop me a mail if you havent yet and are interested
MM better late than never Got your mail
Jamie drop me a mail too as I dont think it is the done thing for me to post the prices as it is not the classifieds .
Going to go with duggies suggestion and do a shim it it does not fit a stem but will do most I think
Here is a better pic of the logo ( no offence to Paul )
with a question involved just on one side or both sides ???
This also goes for the baby Trout which I have just collected from Paul
( www.kadel.co.uk ) one hell of a nice guy if you need any cnc stuff.

It seems to be damn difficult to photo shiny ali things
the pics dont do it justice it is a real sweet machined little housing
just 50mm x 50 mm x 28
the perfect little helmet light 😆
Both sides me thinks!
Looks really cool, can't wait to own one.
If it helps I am more than happy to do a little freebie photography for you one weekend. I have a Nikon D80, but have off camera wireless flashes so you can illuminate at a shallow angle to help pick out the detail.
I think one side would be better, unless you're heavily in symmetry 😉
That ickle helmet light is so cute, that could be a big seller on looks alone.
Conrad
You are one hell of a good guy and yes please that sounds great
split jury Paul and me had the same discusion
Gary the mini trout is a real Beauty be even better with some leds in
I have got to say a big Thanks to Paul for tweaking the original just a little
Trout, I thought after posting. Your shots on the glass table are very good. You might be able to get good photos by shining a spare light at a very shallow angle to accent the one being photographed. I have a 50mm wide apperture lens so can get some nice product type shots. Would like santa to get me a macro lens, but a guy can't have everything.
One other thing that I think would really work is to inject a little of that art deco 1930's style and/or 1950's rocket style into the designs at a future point. Obviously function is more important than form, but I think that those two era's had heat-sinks and fins down to a T.
[never thought I would type that, feel free to ignore!].
will these be available as just housings?
or possibly housings + leds/lens + maxflex's.. kits for budding solderers? 😀
very interested if so!
Conrad Cheers some good ideas but pin heads and felt tip come to mind when talking photography
the art deco sounds cool but too many changes and the machining cost rise worth thinking about though.
Spacehopper
Yes you can buy just about any combination you have mentioned there
That's not fair! Just put down a deposit on the 6 led light, and there you go putting up pics of dinky little helmet lights. It's not big and it's not clever. 😉
Totally agree with the Art Deco thing, it's possibly my favourite art/architecture style, and these lights defo have more than a touch of it. It seems to me that development of quality high-power LED lights by individuals is much more advanced in the UK than anywhere else. Would that be correct?
Hello Trout
Please add me to the list! they look f&%King amazing!
All the best

Hello Trout, do you have any pics of the little Troutelight in action? It'd be good to compare the daddy and the sonny 🙂
Hi Trout, sent you an email the other day (but so did about 500 others I reckon)
If my stuff's in the way now this is taking off, just send it back
Are those playing cards getting bigger or lights getting smaller 😆
The logos finish them off in style, well done mate. All you need know is the bits to go in them 😉
should have answer on leads in the morning
Scaredypants
you are very close with the email count
one is built the other sat on the lathe will not go near the computer tomorrow untill the other is finished and will have in the post before the weekend
Hairy
jeeze I only got it at 17.00 today but will have some weedy XPE leds in it just after I have finished scaredys light 😆
all looking very good, that logo looks superb
Thanks, you're my hero!
Hi Trout
lights look fantastic, when do you think a full DIY kit for the full size troutlight will be available ?
Cheers
Baz
Ta Bazzer
Kits will go out first as I dont need to build them so mid Oct if all goes well .
Hi
Will the bar mount be complete by then ?
Will all the drilling of the cases be complete so its just a bolt, solder and glue operation ?
Sorry for all the questions 🙂
Baz
great stuff trout!
email sent regarding a kit! 😀
Bazzer
you got it no drilling needed just assemble and go 😀
well nearly
Hi Trout following a discussion on another thread re commuting lights can you see any way of fitting some sort of 'glow ring' to your light?
Well it aint round so probably no
but there is a whole load of light coming out of the bottom you will be well visible from the sides .
I will have a look with one and maybe take a pic from 90 degrees with it on the bike when I get one built up
I was going to add 'more of a glow rectangle'. The side visibility sounds good though.
Maybe just a small cut-out or even some very small perforations on the sides to allow some light to spill out....
Jeeze you lot want the world , yes it can be done to put some windows in the sides but I think it would be a distraction to the rider .
it is not going to be a design feature of the production model but you could do the mod and it would def work .could even put in amber windows .
on an update of the little baby Trout I could not resist chucking some leds in it for testing to its suitability for a helmet light .
put 4 XPEs in so approx 800 lumens and the narrowest optics I have
and wow is the word what a nice beam
now i know with extended exposure it can be made to look a lot brighter
but I use the same setting for all my shots so it can be a true comparison
to other optic mixes and lights .
and the camera setting is
cannon powershot S40 white balance daylight 6 sec @ f4
Hi, can you tell the cost of both the full-Trouty and the half-Trouty lights please (I understand the battery would need to be bought from Smudge BTW)?
And... why is the half-Trout 800 lumens when the full-on version is 1100? Or am I missing something?
Xpe's in the 4 led version xpg's going in the 6 led version I think. If xpg's went in the small one it would be brighter still.
Hairychested - MemberHi, can you tell the cost of both the full-Trouty and the half-Trouty lights please (I understand the battery would need to be bought from Smudge BTW)?
And... why is the half-Trout 800 lumens when the full-on version is 1100? Or am I missing something?
No idea on the real price just yet but it wont be £50 but it will be the cheapest 2000 lumen light out there ( and it can be turned down so no whingeing about too much light). If it turns out there are some folks interested in having one of these lights then mail me and we can go from there.
Thought the full-on version was nearer 2000 lumens
Xpgs in the baby trout would be around 1380 lumens!
Thought the half trout would be a 3 Xpg light??
Troutie has only put the XPE's in for testing. The XPG's aren't out yet 😉 not long now though
I've pre ordered a 20mm triple for my dinotte conversion and a 35mm for a lumi Hid can i've aquired! 😀
Trout, that little light is amazing! Just imagining what a combination of the two would be like, with both using xpg's. Low power would be all you'd need 90% of the time, and the run times would be exceptional. Oh, and the little light could be called the Small Fry...
No? Ok, I'll get me coat...
Actually, to be pedantic, it should be called the Fingerling, but that just doesn't sound as good, somehow. 😀
Add in the classified with the prices on and a donation made to the beer fund at stw towers. http://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/trout-light
Hairychested this is just a test light with the XPEs in
both lights will have XPG R4 Leds in for an in theory max lumen count of 2070 and 1380
the half trout is 4 leds because the driver cavity can only be so small and 4 leds worked best and looked best for the size .
it is a fiddly little bugger to wire up
the 6 led one is easier to assemble with the larger cavity .
😆 Xipe ( fingerling )
Can you post a pic of the battery connectors you use please ?
For some reason I seem to be drawn to the Half Trout/Smoked Trout/Troutlette/Fingerling ...
NzCol
the standard 2.5 dc connector as the lumicycle type is standard on smudges batteries .
quite a few folks are putting their own connector on to match their existing batteries .
with the odd few supplieing my with a matching connector for their batteries
so it is a flexible arrangement
Trout.
For side visibility, couldn't you just put a small hole in the side and plug it a PC core ?, interferrence fit.
🙂
Solo.
Are the standard 2.5 dc connectors (lumicycle type) robust enough? would it be worth looking through the RS catalogue for something a bit more waterproof and with a bit of a positive lock so they don't come apart? Any suggestions?
ChrisS I agree the 2.5 are not ideal but I have stared at the rs stuff for ages hoping one will jump out that is great .
if anyone finds a real good one please let me know .
all the ace ones are mega dear .
solo yes side vis is doable but not yet on this run
We use bulgin mini buccaneers for our products - v robust but not cheap and a bit bulky.
Why are decent cable glands so much bigger than the cables? 😡
You can get lock on 2.5mm dc connectors. Also remember to tell troutie if you will be using a lumicycle battery as the polarity will be reversed to his standard light
AMP Superseal are what I use.

Good find cxi, not silly money but still quite big!
Aye, not the smallest but then you have a keyed, locking, IP rated connector. I usually finish them off with some heat-shrink. They are quite easy to make up without the £100+ Amp crimp tool, even for a ham-fisted goon like me who has killed several TaskLED boards 🙄
Mr Trout please mail me matt@singletrackworld.com
All sorted cheers ;]
A bit of explaining now
they were getting worried that it was getting bigger than just a few lights for the mates and did not want a fuss from paying advertisers
so we have agreed I will pay for an add on here .or a banner not sure exactly what but it needs to be sorted on monday
I am now needing the creative help of you lot to do me a banner add of some discription as my skills dont go to creative IT stuff
bit from matts mail
"What I'd like is an advert (banner would be great ) at XXXX a week in return I can open the thread(s) again and also calm any other advertisers. I see you've had people with artwork ideas for you so I'm sure they can knock something up for you!
Banner size is 728x90
And he said they would do a review in the mag when I send a final finished one Whoo whoo
trout, you could use my favorite picture with the Halogen PIR lamp attached to the helmet in your advert?
Do that and I will buy a light from you. 🙂
Tinsy post the pic up for the budding designers to use and you are on a deal
How about a simple animation of a trout leaping from the water, using similar style of graphics to the one posted for your logo.
🙂
CC.
That picture is going to follow you forever.
😀
CC.
Trout - where are you from? Nothing weird, just that I went to school (in Crofton, West Yorkshire) with a Mark Trout, and as its an unusual surname, I wondered if that was you.
trout, YGM about a light unit... use the pic, surely its not just me who thinks its highly amusing?
🙂
Yeah, its a good piccy.
How long ago did you take that picture Trout ?.
CC.
Blimey trout you have been busy! looking forward to seeing how the beamshots on this one will compare to my first gen Troutlite - how do i justify the upgrade to the Wife is the other problem .....
AM.
Good point.
However, I suspect that you may find, all you have to do is replace the LEDs themselves.
Looking at the build and spec, I'm guessing that all you have to do is replace the XP-Es with XP-Gs.
If thats true, then upgrade may be nominal.
Just an Idea. Obviously Trout would have to confirm this, before you go messing with your light.
🙂
CC.
Tinsy Thanks for the reminder
Barnslymitch
Trout is my nickname from school
last name Hadaway shortened to haddocks then trout no idea how
CC I think about 3 years was off with the man flue and bored .
Averagemark yep upgrade is just a led swap as cc says .
if you want it doing after the builds I need to do then send it back
and I will do it for the led cost only
but why not sell it and have a nice new one collectors items now only 52 ever made
Trout.
You really are the man. You're happy to upgrade a collectable light at cost. That is service !
And, that pic of your latest light is sooooo good.
Looking real nice. White on gun-metal grey looks soooooooooo GOOD !.
Nice work fella.
😀
Jesus that gun metal grey one looks good! I wish I could justify buying it!!!!
Would it be possible to machine one of those to take 3 or 4 internal 18650 batteries instead of an external pack? I'm trying so hard to convince myself I will use it enough to justify the purchase!!!
Trout.
That pic is classic now. I love the tongue in cheek atmos about it, but also that you put yourself up for it.
Very uplifting to see that logo and to know that it is the result of an STW team effort. This forum can be so great, and it seems that there are some really talented types here.
Looking forward to the Trout Ad on here, but sorry you got stuck for additional cost. Looking back on previous posts, you were hardly making much on a light anyway, now you've got the extra cost of the ad to cope with.
Perhaps we should consider that you're probably buying your components at retail prices, unlike the big boys.
Anyway, the logo is fantastic.
😀
I don't know much about electro-conductive paste but I do know that a young trout is called a parr.
I have to say I'm loving this thread.
Duckers.
Buy one and then "justify it".
Having one will make you ride more, and thats got to be a good thing, hasn't it ?.
3 - 4 18650s would be a heavy light.
Isn't there a self-contained light in the Hatchery ?.
S.
I tend to do more running over the winter months, maybe I can strap it to my fat old heed and find somewhere dark to run....
Runner ?.
Duckers, don't get me wrong old boy, but cycling is better, imo.
No shock-loading the joints, cover more ground, undisputed justification for cake and beer consuption. Obviously not at the same sitting though....
😆
S.
