Mate has been offered a deal on a new bike but it's got a triple and he wants a compact double. Does he need to swap shifter and mech to do this or can they just be set up to not shift to third position. I'm thinking it would work okay - thoughts?

And it's what he wants to dons not point in starting a triple v compact debate.

Yes - just set the limit screws on the mech.

I've been doing that for a couple of years, running a triple chainset but took the granny ring off to resist temptation.

It works fine, however I fiddled about so that the 'extra' shift was in the granny ring position, meaning that once I had reached the big ring, I couldn't accidentally shift again. Reason for this was that I had seen/heard that you could break shifters if you accidentally forced the third shift against the 'high' limit screw, super-tensioning the cable and knackering the shifter internals.

I've since moved to a double chainset and after two rides am already convinced that the small difference in chainline really does make a difference, spent much longer in the big ring which resulted in less chainslap and seemed to feel smoother (although I can't explain that last point).

Did exactly that, and haven't felt any need to change my shifter 5 years on.

I've done this ๐Ÿ˜ก

13FM is correct. Except you don't have to force it to break it, it just collapses easy as anything ๐Ÿ™ With Ultegra at least.

105 shifters I had before lasted 3 years before giving up set up the wrong way. Although the mode of failure was the same.

set up the wrong way

But thats the annoying thing, according to Shimano's instructions, the 'wrong' way is in fact the way least likely to damage the shifter (i.e. extra shift in granny position).

Either way, my front shifter gave up at the weekend too ๐Ÿ™

13FM I meant set up the wrong way as in having small and big set up as granny and middle, rather than middle and outer. Shimano's way is the good way. I got three years despite doing it the wrong way, whereas the wrong way with the repalcement ultegra lasted 1 hour.

Firestarter - it says 'triple' on it if it's triple.

Thinking about it this is what I did, though I have no idea why nor that you could damage it set any other way - just seemed logical that the outside ring should be at the last upshift. That and I think it may have just worked like that afer I'd set the limits without any extra thought.

Yes.

New front mech might be needed (the shift plate is deeper and may catch - oh, hold on, he's going to a compact, should be fine).

New rear mech also needed, otherwise long cage will give away origins and he'll be forced to ride 20 metres off the back of the group.

Yeah - I set mine up with the big ring missing because I had an mtb that worked like that for years and was fine, on older XTR shifters. I suppose they are made more strongly ๐Ÿ™‚
