Hi All

I've got a stans tubeless conversion using stans rims strips that include the embedded valve stems.

A thought just occurred to me: I always carry a spare inner tube just in case my tubeless setup completely fails however if i needed to fit on the trail I would have to rip out my rim strip completely. Not something i relish doing as it costs about £20 per strip and a whole lot of effort to fit.

Is this true or am I missing someting?

Downside of strips vs tape and removable valves.
Using anchovies (genuine innovations) I've only had to resort to using a tube half a dozen times in the last 9 years of running tubeless.

Can't you just use the yellow tape like everyone else?
I'm sure the strip can be refitted, but if you do it right the need to refit is a lot less often

Whole lot of effort?

Not following you?

Takes about 30 seconds a wheel to put them in and about a minute to get them out. (undoing the valve lock nut can be a pain!)

And you have (should have?) a normal rim strip underneath. Ready for the tube.

And yellow tape doesn't work on a good number of rims, not without burps and/or rolling the tyre. Especially if you make use of lower pressures.

The Weldtite tubeless repair kit is good, get one of those. You can buy consumables for it off eBay if you use up the glue and strip things.

Stan's rim strips are reusable, you don't need to bin it if you put a tube in. And you should take it home with you anyway even if it's knackered, right? You should have some tape under the tubeless strip anyway really, so fitting a tube should be straightforward.

Its a tubeless conversion, my mavic rims aren't UST so I've had to use a combination of tape and rim strips.

I have yellow stans tape and on top of this the stans rim strips. Getting them on was a hell of a job involving soapy water and a lot of swearing. I can't imagine on the side of a trail while tired and covered in stans gunk that it's going to be any easier getting them off.

I've never had a catastrophic stans failure yet. But it just came to me in my sleep last night that popping in an inner tube wouldn't be as easy as I thought.

Had plenty of Non UST rims tubeless without the strips, did you try that first? What rims?

I've got Mavic XC 717's with Hans Dampf Trailstars.

I've tried getting a seal with out rim strips just using tape but it wouldn't happen.

You got the right sized rim strip?

I've never had any sort of an issue. Pop the valve through the hole. Run the strip in with finger tips.

To remove, push the valve through the rim then run the strip off the rim with a finger, or a tyre lever.

Yep got the right sized rim strip. This was more of a theoretical question really.

"how hard is it to remove a slimey rim strip in the pissing rain on the side of a trail". I guess it can be done with a little hassle and elbow grease.

Weird, last time I used Stan's strips (years ago, to be fair) they went on dead easy. Maybe pull them off and give them a bit of a stretch, I dunno?

Rim strips shouldn't be that tight. I guess using a 26" strip on a 29er might be a bit of a stretch though?

Cheers guys, you've given me confidence that everything would be fine on the trail if my tyre was attached by a bear or some sort of enchanted thorn bush.
