Yesterday was the first day i'd rode a trail centre in a while (Dalby).

I was a bit gutted to see the amount of litter on the trails. Soft drinks bottles, gel wrappers, inner tube boxes and even enduro goggle tear-offs.

I know some could be put down to accident (falling out of bags etc) but it really is carelessness.

I think its a growing problem and needs to be sorted, both by ourselves and the FC etc but putting up a few bins.

Do any trails now operate trail litter picks as well as dig days?

No no no no no no no - you got any idea how mush more litter that would produce? Plus - who would empty them?

It's no better on the road. I can identify the local sportive routes just by following the gel wrapper trail.

When you see the amount of rubbish strewn along the roadside verges on our country lanes you have to suppose there's a sizable minority of people who think this kind of behaviour is acceptable. Responsible riders have to take the initiative and pick up litter we see along the trails. It's no big deal to pick up a plastic bottle and shove it in your rucky.
If you ride with a group and you see anyone in it drop litter, challenge them about it.

It's bad enough with kids making a mess around jumps spots, but the adults and particularly racers chucking gel wrappers about are disgraceful. If you've got enough time to use the thing, there's enough time to shove it in a pocket.

its PATHETIC that people are "strong enough" to carry food and drinks out on their rides but are overcome with the sheer weight gain an empty can or packet can be when its been eaten/drank! get a grip people and take yer shit home, it boils my piss too.

+1 the amount of mcD/KFC/BK meal wrappers dumped out of town shows that plenty of people don't GAS (ignoring the malicious fly tipping that's getting more and more prevalent)

A percentage of the population are arseholes, some of them will be cyclists, some of them will no doubt be STWers (tho don't expect many owning up to it) On the plus side I've acquired several free innertubes due to this type of shit behaviour.

8L+ backbacks on most riders = no excuses not to take your litter away with you.

I have followed behind more than a few bin lorries, recycling units and skip wagons whilst driving. It is disgraceful how much rubbish can fly out the back of them just driving along. I'll bet a good chunk of roadside litter you see doesn't come from individuals.

I finished walking round the course of a certain popular off-road event in a national park last summer with a significantly larger amount of food and drink packaging in my bag than I started out with. Gel-wrappers, bottles, bags, all sorts. And this was basically an enduro format event so it's not like they even had the bad excuse of keeping up with a bunch or something. ****ing scratters. 🙁

This is it for me. My riding buddies and I do our best to clear up what we find on the trails, but at the end of the day we shouldn't have to. If you can carry it out with you, you can take it home too.

Drives me mad.

I have a carrier on my bike for my dogs poop bags and use it for picking up litter too. Gives me a good excuse to be on cheeky trails as if anyone questions me being on there I can point out the collection of wrappers etc that I have picked up - normally near gates or places I am stopping at anyway. Just to point out most wrappers I find could be walkers just as much as mtb'ers as they are generally sandwich/crisp bags or chocolate/breakfast bar thing wrappers.

I did find a couple of used Co2 canisters and gel wrappers dumped in the gutter in Weston just before Christmas too when going to the beach. Could have been dropped by accident of course.

Not my usual stamping ground, but met a mate at Ashton Court last sat. We did that and Leigh Woods.
Was amazed by the litter on the Ashton Court Nova blue bit ( there was very little on the tiny red inner loop thing).
Maybe the council guy who sells the bike wash tokens at the golf hut ( only one at a time, heaven forbid) , could cheer himself up by walking or even riding it once a day and tidy it up.
I can't believe that folk dump that much rubbish though. It's not as though they have to take it far, or, even cart it up any hills !
I get pissed off with carrying the odd plastic bottle or gel wrapper of our local trails, but there's no excuse.

On the couple of occasions when I've tried trail centres I've been shocked at the plastic bottles discarded within the first mile of the trail centre cafe. I always thought cycling was a sport that attracted people with an interest in environmental concerns but apparently that's not the case.
