Okay feel a bit like a pigeon among the cats here but here goes... I've got a very keen mountain biker partner who did a 100k off road organised ride. It wasn't very clearly marked and he ended up following a guy with a gps(?) thing that beeped to let them know if they went off the original route. Father's Day coming up and thought his very generous children could get him one. I haven't a single idea where to start. Got about £200/250 . Any advice greatly appreciated.
Thanks ,a singletrack virgin.
Garmin Edge 800 with the OS mapping (this bits important the basic model doesnt come with the OS map, and th emap costas almost as much as the GPS) is as good as it gets.
I've got one and TBH it's not that good compared to a map and knowing how to use it (the screen isn't big enough, there isnt enough resolution and the mapping is 1:50,000, not 1:25,000), but is good enough to point out obvious turnings and navigate on road. And give you a starter for 10 for finding yoursdelf on a real map if you're lost.
They can be had for under £300 if you shop arround, the version with the bundled map is called the trail bundle.
Great. Thank you.

I just picked one up - the edge 800 trail bundle from go outdoors. You have to pick up instore but basically they will price match anyone else who has it in stock and also take off 10%. I picked up my edge bundle for approx £235 in the end as wiggle had it for approx £260 online and they accepted a price match against that.
It's good but took a bit of setting up. Nice to be able to draw a new route on the PC at home, upload to garmin and follow off road.
