Apologies for seeking the stw collective opinion on track wheels again, but I want a shiny new rear wheel for my Langster and need some like-minded people to help me justify spending the extra £50 to get a Goldtec custom built on a Mavic Open Pro - rather than buying a Halo Aerorage off the shelf 😀

So... why's it worth it then?

Thanks 😀

goldtec wheels are good. I've a set of draco hubs biult up to wheels by them and rate them highly. I'm about to buy another from them as I need a new rear to replace a trashed wtb wheel on the single speed.

Oh and a related question - are double-butted spokes more comfortable or in some way 'better' than plain guage spokes? (Apologies for my ignorance!)

Buy my rear wheel! Surly fix/fix hub on a velocity deep V 😀

If not, I would definitely spend up on the goldtec/open pro. They are just much better quality, the Halos seem to be more form over function.

Cool, thanks neilnevill - that's always a good recommendation!

I've got Goldtec/Open Pro on my Langster, they're excellent hubs, really smooth. Can't comment on their wheelbuilds cos I built mine.

And yes, double butted spokes are lighter and stronger than plain gauge.

I also have Goldtecs on open pros on a fixed wheel, makes a very nice wheel. Bit flash for a Langster no?

Er, I know it's horses for courses, but on a Langster I'm not sure I'd spend on Goldtec hubs.

The wheels I have on my road fixed are Open Pros on Planet-X track hubs with double butted Sapim spokes (built three cross, natch).

My track bike has some super old Miche hubs that are the smoothest things I have ever used.

Thanks for the replies guys. Yeah, I know it seems a bit silly to spend so much on a Langster, but thing is - I really like it. Geometry is perfect and well, I just really really like the little frame. 🙂

In time, it's likely that everything will be changed on it - it's already got carbon bars, post, new brakes, saddle and a White Industries Eno... I know it might seem silly, but so what if the frame's cheap - I like it! (And if/when I brake it or change my tune, I can move the bits over onto something a it more 'fitting' perhaps)

Anyway, good to hear people are pleased with the Goldtec/Mavic combo, and thanks for the spoke info crazy legs. From everything I've heard, it sounds like the Goldtec will be a good investment for track wheels - whatever frame I have.

I don't suppose anyone knows of the weight of their hubs? I have emailed to ask but as yet haven't heard back...

Oh and PJ266 - thanks for the offer, but I don't ride fixed... and before you suggest it - I don't think 6 months pregnant is the time to try!

Anyway, thanks again guys... I'm pretty much convinced, just need to raise the cash now 🙄

Cheers!
