(Weather allowing) we are hopefully heading up to Torridon/Shieldaig/Applecross area this weekend.

As it is a familty outing, I will probably only get a couple of hours on the bike on my own.

Can anyone recommend any 2-3 hour routes in the area? preferably with not to much hike-a-bike.

Thanks.

I can't reccomend any routes, but the gille Brighde restaurant in Diabaig is excellent.

If times tight get the family to drop you off at Kenmore and meet them at the Applecross walled garden cafe at the other end.

Nope ..Applecross to Kenmore & back..then a pint in the Applecross Inn ..just a slight tweak which makes all the difference 8)
If you want something less travelled try the track from Upper Toscaig to Airigh Drishaig and back ...you will however have to negotiate a large deer fence early in the ride. There is a gate which the bike won't go through so you will need to balance it on the top and retrieve from the other side ( don't try going around the coast as a circular route though ..you will end up in tears )..
Also the track that starts at Grid Ref NG711 399.and takes you over to Coille Ghillide / An Ruadh Eilean is marked as a double track but you cant get a vehicle along it ...however it is great fun on a bike with rock slabs to play on and leads to a fantastic beach when the tide is out ..so time it right and don't bother if it's not ..

These were taken at the end of May 2016 ..I would imagine the conditions could be a good deal different next week !

Another recommendation for the Walled Garden at Applecross, particularly the grilled bacon and maple syrup waffles - the Applecross Inn being a little bit over-rated IMO, besides it's full folks trying to drive the NC500 as fast as possible.

Applecross to Kenmore is a cracking ride, even if it's wet.

We did it a few weeks ago and would recommend it. There's only one small section of 5 to 10 mins of hiking (up the side of a waterfall), or you can ride it if your seriously fit and good!

Its all hard packed and rocky trails that drain really fast, so you do get a lot of streams and big puddles, but it's not boggy at any point.

Agree with the inn being overrated btw.

Agree: Kenmore- Applecross for the Walled Garden café is the best quick ride, one way with a pick up at the lunch venue if you are really pushed for time. One rider getting on with it should be able to cover the 10 miles one way in about 2 hours but if you can possibly swing it, do the round trip as the route rides really well northbound. The last descent rides longer than you might think but maintains interest.
If you're even tighter for time, get dropped at the Bealach café near Kishorn then ride along to Achintaid, then climb over the short but surprisingly interesting hill trail to Loch Reraig. Return and wait at the café for your pick up....

It's not haute cuisine but any time I've been it's been well above normal pub grub. Normal pub grub to me is straight out the freezer and into the fryer!

The Walled Garden is better though.

To be fair the Fish Pie at the Applecross Inn was outstanding to the extent that I had it on two consecutive nights 😀

Kenmore to Applecross and back should be doable in about 3 hours of you turn around when you hit the fire road, instead of pedaling right down to Applecross.

Push up ben damph and ride back down.

Push up annat descent, over the bealach to the right (name escapes me), brutal descent, then left, back over bealach na lice to annat.

Applecross Inn is superb because if you got there on a bike you've earned it.

Push up ben damph and ride back down.

Push up annat descent, over the bealach to the right (name escapes me), brutal descent, then left, back over bealach na lice to annat.

Although you said no hike-a-bike and I'm not a fan either, it would be a real shame to miss these two, they are fantastic and deserve classic status. But the Kenmore > Applecross is a fine fine ride.

Thanks all,
I shall consult google maps in the morning.
It'll need to be a circular, or out and back route as ill probably be the only driver the (hired) motorhome.
I'm thinking leave the family on the beach at applecross, then out and back towards Kenmore.

If touring I recommend you stay a night in the free (honesty box) camp area above Shieldaig. Great view and easy walk down to the pub.

Another vote for Kenmore > Applecross. Shame not do do Applecross>Kenmore>Applecross as the descents are good both ways, but the view coming down into Applecross is just great.

+1 love for the Applecross Inn. I think the food's very good - especially if you go for the fish. I've had the neptune salad there mor than once and it's always been out of this world.
