MegaSack DRAW - 6pm Christmas Eve - LIVE on our YouTube Channel
I'm just finishing off a pair of 15 year old aliums and looking to replace with another Time pedal.
The thing that attracted me to the aliums in the first place was how bombproof they were. However I've heard that the successors, the XC range, are a bit pants.
Does anyone know if this was just teething issues with early XC models, or are they still unreliable?
I use the Time Atac MX as opposed to the XC but they use the same system. The pedals are great for use, more float, they don't clog up, easier to clip in an out etc. and I've never had an issue with the platform, axles or bearings which isn't something that could be said about some of the top end pedals out there. However they have a weakness and if if you clip the spring hard enough on a rock you can stretch the spring and they become baggy and there isn't a repair... but then they're so cheap you just buy new ones which balanced against the the way perform suits me and if you're more XC then they should be fine anyway.
@xcpootler I’ve got a set of ATAC XC Carbons that I assume are the same mechanically (forged retention arms?) which are about 9yo and still going strong.
The old ATACs like the Aliums had one continuous spring to hold the cleats. The newer ATACs use two smaller springs on either side of the pedal. They are lighter than the older pedals but the composite pedal body that holds the springs wears out pretty quickly. I’ve had a pair die after two years.
@roter_stern That’s only the MXs though? The others look to have one spring on each side.
I’ve gone through about 4 sets of XC8s in the past 6 years. Each set has probably done 6000-10000km.
Either the bodies die or the bushings or sometimes the axles.
I swapped back from Atac XCs to Shimano since the Atac bushes wore out quite quickly. Shimano seem to last forever, although they're heavier and the float isn't as "floaty".
I avoid ATACs without any stainless inserts on the contact surfaces. I keep an eye on eBay for ATAC ‘strong’ the old hefty enduro/downhill pedals.
Rock strike killed one XC4 pedal, the retention bar sheared of completely. Other than that they are surprisingly robust for plastic pedals. Went to Speciale 8, too early to tell if they last better.
