Resolution attempt #18, or something close, attempting to fix my squealing Magura MT7/Storm Rotor combo. Fine on the stand, embarrassingly noisy at some point on the ride. Had issues with both sets (but not my boggo standard MT5s on the HT)- tried changing pads, resetting caliper properly pushing pistons back and aligning manually, checked the rotor for shimmy (the front one has a little one but it's not much), swearing at it, etc.
I like the power and modulation of Magura brakes, just not the noise. I've removed the UberBike Race compound pads I've used for years and stuck in a set of superstar. Rear seems to be sorted, front... time will tell.
On my other set, I gave up, it was like the rotor was too thick or the pads. Measured everything, nothing seemed to be out of spec and this is exactly the setup Magura recommend. Risking fire or possibly fire-y death (based on what the internet says) I changed to a couple of almost new Shimano XT rotors. Blissful silence and a really good lever feel with plenty of power.
See how that goes as the pads wear down, but if I can't fix it on the first set, two more XT rotors are the next plan.
Also opened up the new-ish Pike to see if it had the two tokens it was meant to ship with. It had no tokens. Now it has one. Lots of lovely grease tho.
I did this weird thing called "riding" my bike today!
I know, right?!
First proper ride on the Tarmac since getting the bars sorted. It's *very* nice.
Finally got round to retaping the wheels on my giant revolt that I use for commuting (as mentioned in the things you should be doing to your bike thread) and finally the tyres have stayed up. Haven’t been able to ride that bike since 30th March because it was so frustrating that despite being retaped many times they just wouldn’t stay up.
Very pleased that I’ll be able to ride that in tomorrow as it just feels so sluggish on the mtb
This is probably for the other thread, but I have a audible click with haptic feedback through my cranks when I pedal under load in the eeb. Powered in or not.
I need to do some fault finding but I don't know if I can be arsed.
Well I got bothered.
- Checked the motor mount bolts, cleaned, regreased and torqued. Still happening.
- Checked the crank arms, removed (zero lube present) regreased and torqued. Still happening.
Got me thinking it's an issue with motor. Next job is a call to all terrain to check it out. Bloody bikes.
Today I replaced the speed sensor on my Scott Genius ebike. (a big well done to Westbrook Cycles who got the new part to me super quickly). The old one had failed, which I could tell because a big 503 error came up on the display. And because I had to ride back from town (all uphill on big 2.35 tyres) without assist, having chosen the ebike because my legs were knackered after a hard ride the day before.
I was somewhat annoyed that having put it all back together it was now showing a 561 error. The reliably misleading Google AI informed me that this indicated a voltage discrepancy. So I poked around a bit and found nothing, went for a test ride up the road and it changed into a 562 error. However the bike seemed to be fine.
Hang on, what does the display say in small writing above the 562? Trip? What does that mean?
Ah, I now see the display has a number of settings, one of which I seem to have selected. It seems I must have ridden 562 miles since the last reset.
Not work per se, but just ordered some nice Pinned 155mm cranks for the EEB, they'll be going on next week.
Got a product recall email for the carbon cranks (Cube Acid), perfect time to get rid before they explode on me!
Over the weekend I rebuilt the cranks on the Swoop and cleaned the pistons on my brakes using the single piston tool I designed and printed in the week. Worked a treat and now there's no pad drag and the cranks are creak free.
Have been recovering from eye surgery over the last month and a lot of time has been spent in the garage sorting niggles and swapping things.
Also managed to get out for a ride yesterday and conditions were perfect. Some easy runs over Dowies and Shutcastle (FOD) were just what I needed. Bikes are ace.
Decided to add a click of progression to my forks, which requires air cap off so took at least 7 minutes. Back to the setting I always go back to.
Cleaned the tandem
Realised it needs new BB bearings after being hauled through a few rivers at the weekend. They have done about 5000km so I don't mind
Replaced tandem gear inner and outer - so much cable!
Replaced the rotor and tyre on the back wheel of my Tern. Neither is a big job really but once you factor in actually getting the back wheel on/off the thing the whole affair starts to grow legs so I'd been putting it off for a while.
I will say that a friend's advice to use an electric screwdiver to spin the rotor bolts in and out was genius. Get them most of the way in then torque them properly - took about 2 mins rather than the usual 84 years.
Bought a Nukeproof horizon pedal service kit from Ascend components as my sam hills were starting to develop a bit of rattle after 6 years of abuse (that's right DMR, 6 years before developing a rattle, imagine that!). The kit also comes with new pins so replaced all those too. Pedals feel as good as new.
Unfortunately this resulted in me having a hugey in the shed last night as I was checking the sag on my forks wearing my sliders, I went to step off but the new pins weren't letting go so I ended up falling into the wall and sliding down like something out of a cartoon. Grazed elbow and knee and took a couple of the new pins across the bottom of my toes.
Might be time to take up crown green bowls or something.
Everyone prepare for rain for I fitted summer tyres at the weekend. Apologies.
Following on from my ShockWiz session at the weekend I looked into the recommended increased spring ramp and found I needed to buy Fox tokens which seemed to be out of stock everywhere.
Then I remembered I have a spare Bomber Air in the shed and as luck would have it it’s 0.6 compared to the 0.4 I already had in the Float X. Yahtzee!
So after work tonight I did a swap. A right faff trying to refit them without the best light to see where they fit, but I got it done.
Fitted some new cranks to the Eeb today. Very nice. I like.
Also that click I was chasing has now gone. Coincidence that Cube have done a product recall this week on their Acid carbon cranks that were fitted to it. The pedal insert has been debonding from the carbon. I'm assuming that's what may have been causing the click I was hearing and feeling through the pedals.
New Float X shock for my Scor 2030. Travel up to 130 from 120. Very satisfying job, other than dropping a tiny mudguard screw into the linkage that took ages to locate
I ceramic coated one of my bikes, Gtechniq sent me one of their kits, nice an easy to do. Might have timed it right now we seem to be back to wet weather again.
Whipped the wheels off the Vala (stickier tyres) and the Bronson (not quite as sticky tyres) and swapped the brake discs over (SRAM / Hope respectively) ahead of Boltby Bash this weekend... Bolt check all over the Bronson tonight to make sure everything is nice and torqued up.
The Reserve wheels do look bloody lovely on the Bronson though... might have to get some bought!
Swapped my Cane Creek Helm 2 Coil fork on my LTHT for the new Suntour Durolux 38s - very pleased. Also, caustic soda'd the blue compression adjust knob so that's silver now and matches the decals and my frame which is more important than the actual performance.

would love to know if you think it’s worth it

I think it is worth it, water just runs off like it's been waxed did everything I could rims, bars etc. They say it lasts 12-18 months before needing to be done again so we'll see how it goes.
I swapped my winter tyres for my summer ones on my hardtail. I found this nice little present in my Continental Argotal on the front - over a cm in length. No idea how long it had been there. I trimmed it with my nail clippers and sanded it smooth before storing for next winter.
Set up the ShockWiz on the back of Reeksy2's Rocky Mountain on Wednesday as he has always claimed he blows right through the travel on it. Given he's not very big at all I never paid much attention. He did an evening session and recommendations were for an extra 5% air and a token. Did that last night and he should get a ride on it Saturday before a race on Sunday. Hopefully it works as a cheap upgrade rather than replacing the shock with something better.
My daughter wanted to take her bike to university in September. I thought it would be better to find a cheap rough around the ages bike rather than the gleaming Pashley that she loves.
I found a Pashley Penny in a sorry state with a rusted frame, bashed mudguards etc. and picked it up cheap. I dismantled it and cleaned it all up a bit. Found the Humbrol spray paint for the colour, sanded down the rust, primered the metal and patch sprayed it up. Not a full respray I didn't want to make it look to good or go to too much effort. I just wanted to arrest the rust and make it rideable for a few years.
It is back together gears and brakes now working. Cheap as chips. Pannier needs levelling.
I (with significant help from a good friend, thanks Jon) fork lower leg service, new frame bearings, changed to my other shock.
Felt very smooth on the ride home. Need to actually test it off road.
Lower bearings were in a bit of a state after a year. how often can I claim my free bearings from santa cruz without them thinking I'm taking the piss?
What makes you think they will think anything about you? If the bearings are stuffed get new ones.
I've been struggling with the Zeb Ultimate on my Edit MX for a while now. After a decent chat with J-Tech the conclusion was I just needed to be heavier. At 160mm the air spring is simply too progressive for my relatively light weight meaning from a travel perspective I may as well have a 140mm fork. No Ta. Tried the negative volume spacer, but it barely makes a difference at 160mm. Damping could help a bit but not much.
We got some ideas as to what would make it work and it was getting into how much territory. Got tempted by a '27 lyrik ultimate and decided to swap the zeb out for that - just finished fitting it. Hopefully get out for a proper test tomorrow.
Took my forks to Black Art to get the rebound damper fixed up… hopefully. If they’re fubar he’s offered me a few hundred off an already discounted new set of 36s. So tempting but not really in any way part of my budget right now.
CAme back from madeira over the weekend, and realised a few setup issues I could remedy, as well as having knackered the rear mech!
So Shorter stem, higher rise and wider bars, and fatter grips fitted... And fitted GX T-type axs to replace the OG GX AXS...
Kept the original cranks (carbon XO) and chainring...what to do with the new GX crankset now!!
DrP
Serviced my One Up dropper which had become a bit sticky at the final part of the return to full height. Really simple to do and working great again now.
Serviced my Fox 38, which was easy and calming. 🙂
Put my Fox 38 back on my bike that has the new improved headset internal cable routing AND angle adjust headset. That made me want to cut off my own head and set fire to it. 🤗

That's some image/degree of frustration 😂
I've been tinkering with my new to me road bike since the weekend. It was clearly loved mechanically by it's former owner but the fit / feel was definitely a long way off on my first ride.
I got the seat position pretty much sorted straight away although I/it needs a saddle with a hole long term.
Have now adjusted the bar angles and hoods and in doing so I finally figured out how to tape round the hoods to get the tape coming the right way on the tops. And I wrote it down because we've got two bikes where it's imo backwards. 🫣
Tonight I changed the tyres to some folding 28s at 80psi. The hard wall, wire beaded 25s at 90psi were a bit harsh for my bulk. Added a Garmin mount and Exposure light bracket and I partially redid the bar tape as I managed to leave a gap on Sunday 🙄 that my eagle eyed son spotted.
Finished with a quick spin around the block after today's fettling and it feels very different to my first test ride. The whole balance of the bike and ability to get power down has changed. I knew I would get there as all the basics of the bike were there. Just needed some tweaking. 🙂
I've weirdly really enjoyed the process of working through the fit stuff.
Looked at them and said,"Good evening".I,m not much of a tinkerer.

Picked up the fork. He was a bit surprised how I'd managed to damage the damper so much in the space of 6 months since a full service. The issue wasn't the rebound damper being loose as he'd suspected, but air in a place it's not supposed to be (he explained and I nodded along). So it's fixed, but he said it may well end up the same in a few months time.
I do have the option of buying a brand new Fox 36 Grip X2 for $1400 (~700 quid) though... which would be tempting if I had any money.
Replaced the frame bearings in my 2016 carbon Occam. Does this main pivot look right to you? There's much more space on one side than t'other, yet the spacer is how big the spacer is, the bearings are definitely seated, everything's in the right order as per the manual diagram, torqued to spec, and I can't see another way of installing it: the main pivot with its o-ring, washer, and spacer have to go in first (before the cone) and be torqued up because the 8mm hex socket is behind the cone.
It's not the first time I've done the bearings but I don't remember it looking like this, but maybe I've just never noticed the offset. Seems to be a common Orbea arrangement - can anyone else confirm?
No help I’m afraid… but I had a Yamaha WR250R that I had the same issue with after doing a bearing change and I never did figure out why.
I decided to replace my chain on my gravel bike. The result was that new chain is skipping all over the place so cassette and front ring must have been much more worn than I realised. So bike now out of action until I buy and fit new cassette and ring.
really annoying as I’ve not done a huge amount of miles.
Covered it in a layer of mud which I wasn't expecting.😠

Why not refit the old chain and enjoy riding this weekend?
I'm taking the mudguards off the gravel bike.

Noooooooo....!
Bank holiday at 32C, I'm only doing bike maintenance on the patio - no way am I going out there.
Replaced a knackered bottom bracket with a Nukeproof one bought for £2.99 during the Chiggle meltdown, and stripped and serviced some M540 SPDs for the first time after 5750km (clean as a whistle inside). There are worse ways to spend a morning...

Oh dear I seem to have talked myself around.
Straight from work to my LSS who fitted the crown race, cut the steerer to my spec and talked shit with me for ages.
Then home for dinner and out to the shed for fitting.
I wish the forecast for the next few days wasn’t so crap.
Popped the bike into singlespeed for uplift fun, love the weight and cleaner lines. There are a few things a bit more pressing to spend money on at the moment, but the plan a little later in the year is to get a set of Fox 40's on it and change the rear rim for a 27.5.
WD40 all my locks.Windiws and doors to!😄
Not work per se, but just ordered some nice Pinned 155mm cranks for the EEB, they'll be going on next week.

Did that fix the clicking noise you were trying to track down?
