The forum is dog slow yet again. It’s taking 30s+ to open a topic.
I’ve never known another website or forum be this slow and unreliable.

Waited possibly two minutes (I didn't time it) for the login screen to appear.

Ironically, I can get onto threads while not logged in within seconds, but they're 18 hours out of date to speed the site up 🤔

What’s been the cause of the sloooooooow loading times today…is it just a Friday everyone’s gone to the pub early syndrome.

It would be nice to know wouldn't it? And if it was/is the same thing that caused/will cause exactly the same issue 2 weeks ago, or the week before that, or next week etc. etc.

A scan through this thread shows that this is a perennial problem that is only ever "fixed" temporarily before it goes tits up again and again and again ☹️

another thing, on some threads it returns the first page, hangs for a while then loads the final page. but if you then click return it does not return to the first page no matter how many times you click "back" button on browser - you have to click "latest" then browse threads again.

I just don't bother opening those threads anymore.

This seems to be how they've implemented the "go to your last read post" capability. It's an annoying bodge - it doesn't just mean that it has to load two pages when you only want the second (which in itself would be OK if it were fast per-page), but (a) indeed, it means that 'back' doesn't work properly, but also (b) I *think* it's also why opening those links as a new tab doesn't work (for me, using Chrome on iOS).

It's frustrating, because a very sensible and natural way to go through catching up on stuff is to load the main page, work your way down it, opening any of interest in background tabs until you get to the 'older than when I last roughly looked' part of the page, and then read each tab in turn.

...and opening the 'last post' >> link in a background tab doesn't behave consistently either. I'm not sure what determines what it does, but it often just loads the start of the last page of that thread instead. And there's no button to whizz to the bottom of the thread. So then I have to manually scroll all the way down.

(There is a button to whizz to the top, which is far less useful to me given that I can just touch the clock to do that on any page anyway.)

Absolutely unusable.  I keep thinking maybe I should subscribe but no way with this sort of performance.

Same. Borderline unusable - took about 10 seconds of egg timing just to quote this message ^.

And I agree with the sentiment above - I kinda half think about subscribing just to get rid of the death-by-adverts but not a chance until the performance problems are sorted.

^Comfortably 40+ seconds or so to post that from hitting the Add Reply button to it appearing.

I bit the bullet and did resubscribe, to give everything a fair chance. TBF, things have run well for the last month or so. Just jarring to see 40+ second response times and multiple 'STW is broken' type responses in the browser.

Yes, I had that one around the same time.

And the hardy perennial 502 timeout about 10 mins ago

Niche request…

can the thread “Tractor Trumps - South Glos Rules” be started again, with a few of the recent posts only…

my phone can never load the thread anymore, I’m wondering if the volume of photographs it is trying to load is the problem

… I’d also gladly receive any guidance for amendments I can make to make my phone load it as it is

The option to make the comment entry box full screen does seem to have a corresponding "reduce comment box size" option, at least on my phone and there's no "add media" or "post" buttons so if you wanted to max screen real estate for a large wall of text, you're screwed. I had to close the browser window and start again 🙄

Oh, and the site stopped working completely (wouldn't load) for a short period of time for me but, obviously, it's working as I post this now...

Not even excuses, or any comment or updates at all anymore. Not sure this thread serves a purpose anymore, other than as a lightning rod to keep site performance criticism off other threads ☹️

Two things

1. Forum search in dark mode on Safari. The background of the text box is dark grey and the text is black Not readable.

2. 7.8Mb photo limit. Since the forum resizes during the upload process can this be increased? It's pitifully small and is preventing simple phone pics from being uploaded easily. It's a right faff to resize just for uploading so I just don't bother.

If you're not logged in, the forum is way out of date... currently shows at "Friday, July 10, 2026". I can see why you might put in some kind of caching but 2 days old!?

What phone/app are you using? 7.8Mb is pretty big and, I suspect, caters for 99.9% of users.

Dunno if it's just me, but when I open a forum thread (usually in a new tab), 8/10 times only the first post is loaded, maybe 1/10 times I get 2-5 posts and 1/10 times I get the full thread.

Kinda means I rarely bother coming here any more.

Chrome, on pixel and on MacBook - neither have issues loading other sites.

Is this when you're logged out? if so, sounds like the same issue I mentioned - only logged-in users see a view on the forum that is anywhere close to current

Will we ever get a consistent font colour and size when viewing quotes in dark mode on Android Firefox and Opera?

This one is particularly bad

Does the forum have some kind of IP blacklisting?

Getting "403 Forbidden" for a week or so but only if connected via Vodafone fiber on all machines/browsers. If I pull out the LAN cable, connect a different router with a different provider of via phone WiFi hotspot, then all is OK.

My theory is the IP has been previously used by AI bot content scraping or something.

403 Forbidden is something from the Server, so presumably not Vodafone doing the blocking. And it's nothing to do with cookies or anything like that.

Not with Singletrack, but I've had problems in the past where Vodafone (and Sky) have been very poor at updating their DNS caches resulting in the domain resolving to the wrong IP and seeing 403 or similar errors. Given what you've suggested about switching to a different provider, this might be the case.

Try switching your DNS (either on your device or on the router itself) to use a publicly available one (Google: 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4 or CloudFlare: 1.1.1.1 / 1.0.0.1). Added bonus is these are often faster than ones provided by your ISP so, even if it doesn't fix the Singletrack issue, it might make the rest of your browsing a little quicker.

Still getting server timeouts on thread replies which is very irritating. Doesn't seem to be a size thing (ie if you'd posted pics), but if it's happening to everyone, i can see why you'd not bother interacting with threads.

Safari/Mac here.

So my router got a new IP address (1 digit different) and now STW works OK.
