After 12 months in the wilderness, decided to come back and give STW another try.

May I respectfully suggest that the Subscribe pages may need a bit of work - white text on white background for some data entry fields does make things a little challenging.

Whatever you've done to the 'last read' positioning today, can you un**** it please?  It's loading page 1 of multi-page threads before trying to go the end.  It's doubly irritating because it was working beautifully.

Same with Rob at Emtb forum, it’s a pleasure to use, this one is so frustrating to use I often just give up while waiting for a thread to load.

Is that https://www.emtbforums.com/forums/ or is there a UK one???

Whilst spending ages renewing my subscription yesterday and going round and round and round, I found that clicking on the “Singletrack” header acts like a home button. Brilliant! I wondered how to get to the latest stuff page.
Everyday a school day etc..

I've given up asking for forum overview/navigation buttons to be restored to the bottom of each thread, and so I've carried on going through having to hit the Top of the Page arrow button and it wanging up like a broken window blind, to only THEN use the forum navigation buttons at the top.

At least top of page button WAS fairly rapid. It's now been made super slow to respond which keeps making me think it's not worked and i keep tapping away.

I mean, it's only half a second, but it adds to the general challenge in navigating the site.

Its a shame its gone. There are so many navigation options that I'm sure nobody uses. Does anyone jump to the previous topic have read a thread? You can't even use 'back' reliably as sometimes a link click takes you on a couple of pages

EDIT: I've just used the Previous Topic button and it took me to a post that was updated 2 months ago. Surely we can lose that "functionality" and replace it with a link back to the forum overview?

Wait long enough and whatever random collection of buttons that has to be hit to turn on that functionality while ruining something else is bound to occur.

What happened to the forum darkmode for the entirety of the displayed forum viewing on an iPad?(up to date), there is two bright white bars down the side of the display when viewing the forum page? I had a look through the available settings in account/profile etc but can’t see anything that has changed?.

I did manage to accidentally log out as no buttons were visible on the white background and on attempting to log back in…….oh my ****ing god……even after deselecting the hundreds upon hundreds of vendor cookies allowances the actual forum page was entirely unviewable due to adds everywhere.

😂 That's standard website behaviour since forever, the logo should be linked to the home page.

Looks like an ‘arty’ background picture to me. But it’s so black it’s useless.

Any chance we could go back to having the forum full width so I don't have to zoom in?

Bit of an update this wet saturday.

I've been looking into the ads and I've made some changes.

If you are logged in (free member) then your first 4 pages should be ad free. Then the ads appear.

They will remain for the next 12 page views.

After that the ads will not reyurn for 6 hours.

Anthony has been looking into the remaining white on white, black on black dark mode issues and he has an update ready to launch on Monday that should see the back of those.

The background image is of our next magazine cover. It's an experiment but we are trialing using the space to better promote the mag. The idea is that it will change to match the current cover as we move through the year.

You can't see it though. It's just a faint grey smudge on the black margins on either side of the screen.  I honestly thought there was something wrong with my laptop screen initially, screen burn or something.  Even when I did realise it was an image, I had no idea what it was.

Your call of course, but in it's current form it's not promoting anything.  I also find the black margins distracting and just a huge waste of screen space.

That's fine. It's not meant to be in your face.

It was just flat grey space before

No. That would look awful.

FYI 77% of users (posters and lurkers) are using a mobile.

Forum back to an extreme go-slow, way over 10second page loads and sometimes it takes multiple hits of back button on iPad/safari to return to previous page.

What's your thinking behind this?

Had I not stumbled upon this I definitely wouldn't have realised the first few pages being add free was by design rather than just another strange quirk of the forum. Also once the ads return I can't imagine staying as long as 12 pages with multiple ads that need closing on each page just to be able to read the posts or scroll through a thread. I honestly can't imagine many casual users would.

I know you need to generate revenue through the ads but do they really have to be so intrusive it makes the forum practically unusable?

I won't start a new thread for this, but is Classifieds Messaging spam a thing? I've had 2 or 3 messages now which say "About the advert, message Dave he has it for sale .... " with an email address. Clearly I've ignored it, but the format is the same from different users so I assume there are bots or rogue user accounts?

I thought the opposite must be true which I assumed explained the horrendous formatting experience on a mobile. 🙄

Wouldn’t it be easier to just use some different forum software and ask someone to sort it out?

I imagine a lot of the issues stem from trying to keep hold of all the legacy threads. Which I can understand if their presence on the internet means that when someone searches for "how to remove sudocream from a cat" they end up at STW. Which then, the thinking goes, when they gaze upon the wonder, they think 'I must subscribe immediately'.
However, I doubt that happens in practice and I'd be tempted to archive the lot, have a big link to the new forum, and start again.
But then, I'm not in the business of running a business.

Any time I've done a search I only get old threads, no newer ones.

I tried setting the time scale in the drop down box and that worked for me!

The “advanced search” option.

It would be helpful if clicking the bell took you to the notification page instead of it just floating around on every page being annoying. It would be helpful if it could be turned off by choice as well.
