Doesn’t explain why the same thing started at the same time on my iPhone.

Correct. But then again many others have no issues, it be server side or it could be user. Really difficult to tell when it’s hard to duplicate.

Good info @blokeuptheroad ta.

Why does no other site continually log me out

Why does no other device continually log you out?

I don't know if that helps, if I've missed anything you think might help, I am happy to try to answer it.

Try a different browser on your phone, see what happens?

I get logged out immediately if I close the browser page. If I visit another site, reload STW - I'm logged out. I navigate to STW via the singletrackworld.com/forum/recent link.  Usually via the list of frequently visited sites on the Google browser home page. I always check the "remember me" box.

I've just tried the same thing.  Pixel 7a, Chrome browser; variously closing windows, browsers, even tried launching STW via the Google search bar in case that is somehow different from Chrome itself.  All works fine.  Even survived a reboot.

So what else can possibly be different?  Do you have anything installed which claims to be an 'optimizer' or a 'cleaner' perhaps?

No. Also, I've not had an issue on my phone before. This started at the same time as others were reporting the same thing, although on iPhones and different systems, so it doesn't seem to be platform specific?

I've just downloaded Brave as a test. On an initial look, it doesn't seem to be logging me out when I close the browser page. I don't yet know if it's doing so after a time delay. I'll let you know tomorrow.

I don't mind using a different browser just for STW as a temporary bodge, but it's not an ideal solution tbh.

May I just comment,

IPhone XS, latest iOS updates using safari - no issues at all except for terminally slow page loads,  sometimes up to 20 seconds but usually 5 to 10 seconds.

Tried switching WiFi off and using 4g data connection which is way faster than my broadband, no difference in page load times.

iPad Pro 2018, latest iOS updates using safari- no issues at all except for terminally slow page loads,  sometimes up to 20 seconds but usually 5 to 10 seconds.

No difference between 4g or WiFi

iMac 2019 £2k model 27”, no issues at all except for terminally slow page loads….blah….blah…..blah

Edit : I logged out to see if it made a difference and logged back in, objecting/rejecting all advertising and holy ****ing christ what a bit of a mess of adverts all over the place, temu shit everywhere.

Slightly faster to load pages @ sub 5 seconds than being logged in but still way way slower than any other forum I use.

If I was a new user to the site and experienced the above on attempting to access the site I’d not bother with STW at all,

Happy to try anything else to boost the page load speed.

Yep.  I'm not saying for a moment that it's not a server update which has started causing issues on some devices, the timing alone would point to that as a cause.  What I'm finding strange is that it's only some devices which are affected. Like, for instance, the server was updated to require a specific level of encryption / security which older devices / browsers don't support.

A few years back I maintained a Linux-based internal web server which was used to manage engineer bookings; because we had full control of the client machines (being in the office) we had it set up so that it wasn't good enough simply to accept high-security connections, it explicitly denied access to anything which supported weaker ones.  So technically it was an issue with the server if clients couldn't connect but the solution wasn't to weaken the server, it was to update the clients.

I'm not saying that's what's happening here - there's only so many assumptions you can make about clients across the public Internet - rather it's just an example as to how it might not be as simple as "well STW obviously broke something."

I've just thought of something.

This logout business that seemingly started happening for everyone at the same time - was it the 10th of May?

Don't think it was, more like late June. Last couple of weeks I think coincident with the horrible new invasive menu bar.

I hesitate to say this, but as of this morning I seem not to be getting logged out on the phone! Keeping an eye on it, I don't quite believe it yet!

That's happened to me a few times since this started. Hallelujah I think just to have my hopes dashed shortly afterwards when normal service is resumed...

Hmm. Here’s some weirdness. I normally use Safari but in desperation I downloaded Firefox to my phone and logged in. Then I logged in on Safari as usual. So far I haven’t been logged out again. Fingers crossed

So as of today, I haven't been logged out once. Yesterday and every other day from the end of June it was 8 or 9 times a day.

So did we simultaneously and independently do something to fix our individual problems? Or was a switch thrown at STW Mansion?

I haven't done anything, so I'll give credit to the Todmorden hamsters!

It would be nice if someone would confirm if/what action has been taken - after all the suggestions of it being an impossible conundrum to resolve the infinite client side variations...

Yes also not logged out today. I've changed nothing no new browser, no reset of device on the same handset. How does the resident IT guru explain this?

Dog says hi,

You can't escape them. There is no escape, they're coming for you, and that's that, or it. Separately click on most recent photos of Today's Photo thread. They'll get you. Yap.

I was logged out when I came on this morning so it doesn't appear to be fixed.

Why can I no longer highlight any text in a reply [and then quote it]?

Site has gone back to being as slow as it was before the 'upgrade' 🙄

Edit: Weirdly it seems it's only the Glen Lednock/ Comrie windfarm proposals thread that I can't highlight 🤷‍♂️

Yeah this is really slow for me now, I’m not sure I can be bothered with it anymore. It’s like using dial up.

I think the common blame is on Wordpress, has other forum software been considered? There’s automotive forums I read that use VBulletin and have been around decades with a way bigger archive of posts than here yet they load in a zip.

Sorry but it just reeks of penny pinching not getting the forum properly sorted.

The last "blame" I saw posted was what was effectively a DDoS attack from Singapore.  An update would be nice though.

Seems quick enough for me just now.

You'll let them know when you find that magic money tree then, yeah?

I don't know how many times this needs to be said.  I've no idea about your "automotive forum" (are you referring to Pistonheads?) but STW is a business trying to keep a handful of people in a job and - hopefully - even turn a small profit.  They have one full-time and one part-time developer who are also responsible for the daily upkeep of the rest of the site.

What would you have them do instead?  People complain about paying £3/month for a subscription, people complain about adverts, people complain when STW promotes its own content, people complain when STW has a fundraiser to migrate to a more robust platform with (expensive) "VIP" support... So what's your solution?

I don't get logged out (Safari on Mac and iPhone) but navigating the forum takes between 5-7 seconds between topic pages and going back and forth between topics and the main forum index.

I don't have any solutions though other forums I use are much faster (The Fretboard and The Gear Page).

I too am getting the scummy "you've been chosen as a Vodaphone/BT winner" page hijack ads and while posting this comment a questionable message pop up screen  saying i'm about to leave the site and do i want to save my changes which won't go away.

What with that and the Temu adds plastered over the page restricting the view it is reminiscent of the early days of the internet when pops ups and spam ads were a common place occurrence.

And lastly, I happened to scroll past the end of a chat a moment ago and the icons for the Forum Information section below were all full page sized. Though it doesn't seem to be the case on this thread / right now.

So the log in/log out issue seems to have been stealthily fixed in the background as I'm now back to where I was before I didn't change anything and it stopped working coincident with the last obvious release.

Yeah probly just a coincidence, nothing suspicious at all... Please try not to mess stuff up that's actually working. Pretty please...🫤

Yes being logged out constantly seems to be fixed now. Thank you 🙂

Any chance you can comment on whether a fix for the forum being displayed in a horrible narrow column on an iPad is being looked into? I’ve never seen any other forum do this.

Weyhay! I'm still logged in! Thanks for sorting 👍

Can you sort the slow page loading now please? (1-2 secs). Sorting that might get more new users onto the forum (can't be just me experiencing slow loads, slower than the old forum - android, chrome)

Absolutely.

It's important to remember, when congratulating success. In this case, it's on the back of causing the issue in the first place. We had weeks of it being too complicated to resolve as it was 'obviously an issue at the client end' when multiple people had not done anything and there'd been some pretty significant server side changes coincident with this starting...

Well done for sorting but please slow down a bit to go faster. It's usually better to resolve in advance than run around trying to put self inflicted fires out afterwards. 1.5 or 1500, same principle applies.

Have you considered that its a forum about pushbikes and not really you know THAT big a deal if its not quite perfect?

Good question. Same one as 'what changes were made when it all started?'. It'll be in the release notes no doubt...

I'm not here to argue with any of you - starting a new STW trend 😁

We're all entitled to an opinion and they really don't HAVE to be the same.
