I've been looking around at getting some new short sleeve tops and don't feel theres a great deal of choice these days because:

1: "Athletic fit", I'm certainly not athletic or fit looking. These tops make me look like my body is trying to escape these tops, but is too unfit to do so,

2: Logos everywhere, don't feel the need to be a mobile advertising board,

3: Crazy patterns that either resemble something hanging in the Tate modern or look like the bermuda shorts I wore on Holiday's in the canary islands in the late 80's.

Please show me if there is anything slightly loose fitting or "understated"(in other words a bit boring). I've only found these so far.

I picked up a couple of Gore Bike Wear Countdown jerseys in the sales a year or 2 ago for half price. They are a nice relaxed fit and apart from a couple of little pulls from thorns are wearing well.

The Fusion jersey looks like a decent option as it might be slightly tougher material.

I really like my endura FS260, but that mainly for it's technical wizzardry than it's looks.

And I've a couple of fox and northwave jerses that pull off a nice optical illusion of making me look thin despite being skintight by using black side pannels.

Altura Summit tops are very good (especially when the altura logo falls off!)

My most recent purchase. Rapha occasionally have decent priced kit on sale and I liked how restrained this one was.

I found the Altura Classic jersey a nice fit. It's not a figure hugging top, more a relaxed road top that doesn't look baggy. They can still be found online for around £25 http://www.evanscycles.com/products/altura/classic-short-sleeve-jersey-ec027160#reviews

Ground Effect are good at loose fitting, understated jerseys. I love my Rock Lobster LS jersey.

Not many sizes left, but a bargain if you fit them - the Royal Java tops were the perfect design for me

I've got Lab-Gear ones very similar, but you can't get them no more (I don't think)

[edit]More Royal sizes, but £40 and not such good colours

OP I've found that some kind of base layer (under-armour summer or whatever) and a thin plain black t-shirt work well. The sweat wicks away, the base layer keeps my fat in place and I don't end up looking like a walking billboard.

Concise and to the point, you've gotta wonder haven't you. Design & marketing people take note, this customer is not a lone voice... but those madison ones look fine BTW 🙂

Royal and Altura do various t-shirt-ish, plain designs... Fox do some plain-ish ones. I love my Fox Poachers but you can't get them in a medium any more 🙁

Just purchased a Madison trail SS shirt from Amazon for £13. They are plain, but ware and wash well.

I'm not a fan of the smelly Helly. Plain blue On-One Merino for me when the weather's normal, 50:50 cotton/poly baselayer technical t-shirt when it's nice out. I also don't like the lary logo look.

Plastic just doesn't feel/smell too good!

Another vote for Berghaus - that is what I have and am very pleased with it too!! I find the outdoor brands tend to have better wicking fabrics.

Thanks for all your replies, I've bought the Madison top, but on the lookout for others.

I already have Helly Hansen tops, very nice, looked at the Mavic tops and am tempted.

Even with the replies, it's funny how little choice out there there is for someone who isn't looking for either a tight fit or some top that would look appropriate on a 20 something, not a 40 something or in awful colours.

Grumpiness checking out.

Quite like the look of the Twin Six jerseys available from always riding

Haven't taken the plunge on one yet though, so can't vouch for 'em.

aldi and lidl for basic plain stuff. Always get a size that's generous too.
