No, it's not. In the U.S., wait staff do not receive minimum wage and make most of their income from tips. That's well understood, so not tipping your waiter is pretty lousy. This is a kid who broke his toy and is begging for strangers to buy him a new one.
Yesterday I was of the opinion of "suck it up" and chalk it of as a lesson learnt. But after reading the kids back story and comments from his mates on social media I find myself more sympathetic to his cause. It's clear that it's not the kid who snapped his bike that set up the go fund me page, his mates are very clear that it was them who set up the page and that and that he would never ask for help!.. His mates set up the page because he's not got much money and nether has his family and he's also meant to be a really good lad who is a really skilled biker and he uses that skill to help teach other kids progress their skills.
People can ask for money for whatever they want and whatever their circumstances. This has been made a lot easier via internet/social media with many more 'causes'
Up to each person what they feel merits giving their spare money to but personally I choose carefully which charities to give to each month and giving money to someone who has broken their bike doesn't even register on my list.

We’re not in the US though and I’d counter by saying it’s lousy not to pay people a living wage and making them rely on tips. I’m confused as to how this relates to a kid in a different country (who’s not a waiter) snapping his bike.

Race spec Intense? That's exactly the frame I'd expect to break. They were pretty clear what the expectations for those bikes were when they launched the M9 FRO.

I think the best - most transparent - solution is for the list to be uploaded to Googledocs or similar and a link posted here.
totally unrelated to the gofundme and this situation. But the answer of 'get a job' is coming up a lot. Perhaps just a small reminder that unskilled 'kids' can get f all right now. Most part-time school age jobs are in the service industry that for some reason is not employing right now...

stevextc, nobody is compelled to donate, my comment was more about peoples attitude. There has been no abuse, accusations, name calling. Just gentle banter.

Free members contribute massively to the success of the forum. It'd be a much poorer place without them. As to whether it couldn't exist without paying subscribers, clearly not in it's current form.
