I had a significant dab yesterday.  In the middle of the tumble and struggle to separate myself from the bike I made momentary contact with a very hot brake rotor.  TBH so much was going on I was aware of the sizzle with the rotor but had to take stock afterwards.

That’s a very serious injury, nasty rotors lol!

You get a much worse injury if the massive toothed chainring digs into you.....

I can confirm this is the case, having had to pull a chainring (and the bike it was attached to) out of the inside of my calf, whilst being pinned down by said bike....

Not to mention the damage the ground can do to you if you take a tumble...yes, there are many risks we face if we fall off when we try to ride bikes fast down bumpy trails, feet slipping off pedals shaving skin off shins, or even for the roadies who want to ride even faster down public roads with traffic, pedestrians crossing, slippery manhole covers and road markings, randomly positioned potholes, the odd shard of sharp glass that would cause an instant blow-out.

Worrying about one specific risk is a bit irrelevant really.

Disk brakes are lethal. I'm amazed they are allowed.

What about the risk of "being a dumbass"?  I find myself worrying about that one quite a lot (admittedly more than I worry about brake rotors, so I appreciate your point).

Possibly brake rotors are a safety feature: it didn't bleed because it was cauterised in the act of sizzling

This is EXACTLY why the UCI were so worried about discs.

Cos they're big Fannie's, too.

Think yourself lucky the hot rotor may have saved your life and stopped you bleeding out.

A friend had a collision on the trail with a guy on a motorbike once. Only whilst extracting himself from the pile-up did he realise his shorts were melting on the exhaust.

bit disturbing he found it amusing to wear the same, now rather well ventilated, shorts for the rest of the week...
