[#10116608]

After ripping my rear mech to bits in a teensy bit of mud yesterday, I need a new one. I was planning on running what came with the bikeย  (Altus eight speed) into the ground and replacing it next year with SLX / XT. I can't afford to do that now and I'd rather notย buy a replacement Altus rear mech, so was looking at Alivio M4000, asย I think a nine speed rear mech works with an eight speed shifter.ย Then I found a Deoreย M592 rear mech that claims to be eight / nine speed compatible.

So, is the olderย Deoreย M592 better, than the newerย Alivio M4000? Or has the tech trickled down and I can save a few quid?

Both will work, fit new cables at the same time and you really won't notice the difference.

I'd buy whichever is cheaper.

I'd have which ever is cheaper, alivio is technically a 'lower spec' group but the m4000 mech is basically the same thing as that M592.

Deore has been through at least two full 10 speed refreshes since M592.

And yes 9 speed mechs will work on 8 speed just fine...

8/9/10 mechs all interchangable, Shimano ones anyway. Just as long as the shifter and cassette match you'll be fine.

Thanks all, have bought theย Alivio, a gear cable and a new eight speed chain. Hopefully will be up and running again tomorrow.

On the old shimano Road groups yes, but they changed the cable pull ratio for their 10 speed MTB groups (Dynasis), and later for their 11 speed road groups... And also for 4700 (current Tiagra) 10 speed Road group.

So basically 9 or less you're golden, add another sprocket and the interchangability of parts start to thin out...
