Hi all,
Seemed to have developed tennis elbow in my right elbow recently. Is there any bike fit issues that might help? culpritS. Interested to hear from those who’ve had it.
Thanks,
D
I had a few months of it recently, but more likely to have come from splitting cherry trees that are harder than David Davis' head with a cheap maul. 😆
Rest seems to have sorted it.
I got it from poor swimming technique, as above, rest.
Cycling didn't seem to be a problem, although the usual bike-fit advice to work on core strength to take the weight off the arms couldn't do any harm.
I suffer from tennis elbow every now and again. First port of call is to use ice to calm it down then use the standard exercises you'll find on you tube, but basically:
1. Straighten arm and pull fingers up.
2. As above but push hand down.
You can also strengthen the muscle by using a small weight and whilst resting your forearm on a chair arm you raise the weight without letting your arm lift off the arm of the chair.
I had it for months, sometime between March & October/November then it mysteriously disappeared as just as mysteriously as it appeared in the first place. It seemed to begin one afternoon as I was doing some routine maintenance on my bikes and at one point got so painful that just knocking it on a doorframe or something would be excruciating. It didn't really stop me doing anything I just had to back off slightly. accidently rolling over in the night and sleeping on my arm seemed to make it worse. I found hanging from the landing with my arms straight seemed to help, and also just moving it around a lot during the day. Lots of things on Google to try, see what works for you.
I suffered for about 10 years before resorting to surgery a year ago when it got to the stage where I couldn't even lift a pint. Surgery helped a lot but I still have to do regular physio to keep it at bay. As others have said lots of exercise videos on You Tube and I wish I had done these before it was too late. Cortisone shots and surgery should be last resort.
Hope you get it sorted
Use to suffer many year ago when rock climbing but never had a problem cycling - perhaps it's the angle of the bars and wrists position that's putting strain on your elbows? Perhaps an alt / sweep bar that totally changes the angle of your wrist/elbow would help?
Brake lever position maybe ?
Im suffering with it really bad at the moment and have been for some time. I do think cycling aggravates it with me, although im commuting on the road and cx bike all week. The cross bike is particularly bad if I commute off-road on rough ground. I don't rest it and keep complaining, I know I really need to stop and rest it. I've strapped it up a few times and the support seems to help a bit, but I know rest/strengthening it is the only answer.
Percusive massage then some exercise - like one of those gyro things
Eccentric loading exercises of the wrist extensors works best

Larger grips ? This is a classic tennis fix, double tape on racket grip. Tennis elbow frequently caused by too tightly gripping the racket
Tennis elbow frequently caused by too tightly gripping the racket
Or, in the case you are describing, gripping with the wrist extensors outside of their mid-range, where they will be strongest, hence the effectiveness of a larger grip as a solution.
If you gripped a tennis racket loosely it would fly out of your hand! 🙂
I get bouts occasionally, but cycling is not affected.
I do find that sleeping awkwardly makes it worse, but putting the hand of the affected hand on the opposite shoulder relieves things
