I MIGHT have just, accidentally, bought a new frame.
doh!

21" Slotty inbred, with the plan of building a touring commuter thing.

i intend to put an alfine on it, but for now will be using my existing hope XC wheelset as a single speed.

ive just realised i need a taperlock.... i think....
or do i?
there is no real explanation of the taperlock thing on the on one website that i can find.

can someone enlighten me a bit please?

SPANKS!

Olly

Looks like the dropouts are tapered with a thicker front than back (machined on the inside)to stop the wheel sliding forwards, won't need anything special wheel wise to work in them.

Taperlock (TM) reardropouts: no need to use chaintugs when using bolt up Singlespeed wheels. These can still be run with QR on the inside of the frame, though you would require a chaintug if using a quick release.

this i the only reference i can find, and doesnt make much sense to me

i see what you mean mark. the machined out section around the slot, rather than the whole plate.
might just use "Bolt up" QRs and do it up super tight.
will be a shame to mash up that loverly red paint.

With a slot in-bred and alfine, just whack up the (17mm?) nuts up tight and they don't move. No need for tugnuts.

no the dropouts are tapered, so the bolted up axel physicaly can't move forewards as the dropout is thicker at the front end.

What tony said, it worked with my ti29er although it has left some lovely serrated marks on the dropout. Buy a 15mm spanner to carry with you just in case you ever need to get the wheel out whilst out on tour. My alfine is now on the kona sutra and it's fine for commuting to work but don't think it has the range to do a fully loaded tour somewhere hilly, I'll swap it back to proper gears before any long trips in the new year.
I reckon taperlock would probably work with a QR for ss duties though, as long as it was a decent one i.e. shimano with the internal cams rather than a hope type.

you need the washers (in the bag in the photo)

more info here.

they should be with the frame.

interesting thought.
you may have just saved me 150 quid 😉

Im all excited. cant wait to get it and get spannering.

Jose clicked the buy button twice, so has ended up with two white geared inbreds.
Whoops! 😉

call to on one is in order i think.

The dropouts are tapered, so the bolted up axle physicaly can't move forewards as the dropout is thicker at the front end. Taperlock uses special washers (supplied with the frame) and works best with bolt up axles although good QR skewers often work fine without a chain tug.

However, we suggest using a chaintug when using a QR.
Hope that helps.

sounds good Jon.
i understand now.

OBVIOSULY a QR cant bolt up as well as a Bolt up, and most QRs are pap, but i will give it ago anyway, as i will be using a monstrous 5mm allen key bolt up one, so will be able to torque it up good and tight safely without it snapping.

A chaintug's a good idea whether using bolted or QR axle because it allows you to set the wheel back in the exact same place each time. That's important when using a rear disc brake with those slotted mounts...
