I've not bought a new one since an E2 back in the middle of the last decade, it was so long ago people still thought property was a good investment and Brown was the steady hand on the tiller of the economy built around his sound rules and fiscal judgement! And that sat in it's box while I trashed a succession of crash replacement Xen's before finally coming out to play.

It's now had a hard few years being regularly clouted into low flying trees on night rides, covered in charlie the bikemonger stickers and the occasional faceplant into Swinelys finest roots. It's still sound but probably due for replacement before I properly put it to good use.

So what's out there for the cranially endowed man about town? At 63cm I technically don't even appear on Giro's sizing chart but the E2 and Xen fit with all the adjusters wound right off.

The Xen now looks a bit dated and the E2 was always 2nd choice being on the skeletal side, although it is very light and airy.

I think I recall Met having some larger sizes. I use a Crossover, does the job nicely and weighs the same as something more expensive. LED flashy light in the adjustment dial comes in handy too.

I have a Bell Variant, 62.5 head here, fits easy, loads of adjustment and most importantly comfy ans doesn't look big, like a lot of big helmets

For my planetary swede at 62cm its the Giro Feature for mincing and the THE T2 for doing things I probably shouldn't.

Giro's still got a fair bit of adjustment to go, I like that lid.

I've got a moosive head. I found most of the "big" sizes seem to be big in diameter, but with no extra in the depth, so would end up sitting on top off my head making me look like a comedy mushroom.

Giro Hex fits fine.

Also a massive bonce (need a 63) here and my Xen from about 2005 was the best fit I'd ever had, with the adjusters pretty much wound right out. Now also have a Hex, which I find as comfy. Have found some Specialized also fit quite well. If my failure to get any full face lids on is anything to go by, my head is more long than wide.

I've not found anything more adjustable or comfortable than Uvex helmets.

giro venti: £25 from loads of shops

met crossover: £25 from on-one

i prefer the met as the peak is quite low and obtrusive, i'm sure some people would prefer the giro as the peak is high and barely visible.

anyone know how to change the led battery on the back of the met?

I've got a gigantic cranium too. The E2 and XEN were the only helmets that fitted me. Then I got a XAR and that fitted too. Just now I'm wearing a Specialized Vice and that fits but it makes my head look bigger than the Giro helmets did.

I've tried loads of others on and couldn't get many that fitted.

have the same issue and moved over to a giro xar which fits well. the l/xl variants will be in the sales in the new year. On a related theme can anyone recommend a large ski helmet? sadly my large/xl giro rubs on the front of my head!

I've got a Burton RED that fits my planet sized noggin.

XL hex works well on the bike

XXL Troy Lee D2 on the DH bike

You ask a question and get the correct answer first time - Fox Flux. I have a large head to house my large brain and the Fox Flux is spot on. Has a go-fast spoiler too and flames. Its the equivalent of driving around with your fog lights on in that it makes you go a load faster.

Mines a few years old now so due a replacement and I'll probably not waste my time looking at alternatives as I know the Fox fits perfectly and is a decent price.

My basketball sized head has been protected (allegedly) by Spesh helmets for a while now.

I have a massive head (when I was a kid we even had to get my bloody sea scout hat specially ordered) but I can fit comfortably into Giro Hex lids and still dial in the adjuster a bit

What's the Feature like in terms of cooling? I qquite like the idea of something with a bit more protection without the weight/sweatyness of the full face. But if it's too warm I may as well take the FF if it has to come off on the climbs anyway.

Fox are sounding good

I tried spesh and they looked a bit odd, very small and pearched ontop whereas even the E2 comes down quite a long way.

Check this out for a non-stw type response.

I don't know I have tried nothing similar to compare it to.

I've come from riding with piss pots so it was obviously better than one of those as far as cooling goes. I've ridden around Dalby red in the height of 'summer' without feeling too warm but then I suppose that's subjective.

I had one and found that my head boiled in it..

Couldn't get on with it.

I'm big of bonce too and don't get on with Giro at all. I had a bit of a trying on session at a big shop a couple of weeks ago and the surprising winner of the it-actually-blooming-well-fits award goes to...

It does have a peak if you're worried it looks a bit roadie

What's the Feature like in terms of cooling?

Have had mine since May-ish and curiously it's worse now than it was in the 'summer'

The padding is quite thin but in the summer it dispersed sweat quite well and the vents seemed to help the sweat evaporate fairly quickly in the warmer weather.

Now it's gone cold that simply doesn't work (for me). The padding wicks up the moisture but it doesn't evaporate so it saturates and eventually sluices off in a steady stream of cold sweat urrrrrrrrrrrrggggggghhh

The Feature has gone back in the cupboard until next year.

In terms of the sizing I have a massive 62cm head and there's plenty of adjustment left in the size L.

Edit: would also say that the basic padding has not survived repeated washing very well. Despite washing it in a mesh bag on cold the lining started to separate after just one wash and now it looks decidedly second-hand. Shame really because the actual helmet is very well made but the lining and weedy straps let it down.
