The long serving Romic on my 5spot is possibly coming to the end of its natural life. What do I replace it with though??
I was looking at Fox Vanilla R from TF.. is the push tuning worth it? are they any good out the box?
What else should I look at.. nobody say CCDB 'cause I can't afford it!

Eh up.

I have a DHX 5.0 coil on my Dawg. Plenty of adjustment and it's done me fine so far. It's far better than the RP2 it shock it had originally.

Fox Van RC pushed is ~£300 (secondhand ~£100)
CCDB is ~£475 (S/h ~ £275)

Looking at it over the longer term and the CCBD isn't that expensive as it'll lose the same ammount should you sell it (as a Push tune is specific to you/bike/trails it's not worth anything to a s/h buyer).

I put a push'd Van R from TFT on my 2008 5 spot a while back. Massively better than the RP23 it replaced.

And because it rode/pedalled so well, never noticed the weight penalty really. Currently got a Van R on my Zesty now and for value for money I think you'll struggle to beat them.

I have a Pushed Van R on my Enduro.

In it's std form it was amazingly supple, good mid support and very consistent rebound.

I found it a sapped a little too much power out of pedalling and pumping the trail so had it Pushed it at service time and custom tuned to give more support for these actions. This made the bike amazingly sharp for pedalling and pumping the trail but I felt it sat up just a tiny bit too much when the rear was light such as steep tech trails. I then used the free retune that you get with the TFT Push option to have it set slightly more supple on light stuff but retain as many of the tuned benefits as possible.

Tried it out at the weekend and it is very good. Tuning seems to be all about compromise and trying to decide exactly what outcomes you want so that the tuner can try to match them. TFT did a very good job for me. They can tune the Std unit so phone them up and discuss what you want first.

Van RC will give you more scope to self tune. It was not availabile when I bought my Van R. 🙂

I'm getting close to pushing the buy button on one of the Dueler shocks from Loco tuning, have a look at those. Come with Ti spring for £300 ish.
