How do I fix the adapter kit on the thru axle to mirror the length of my current axle?

From the threaded side put the silver washer on then whatever adaptor you need to ensure the axle is central, ie equal protruding each side of the drop outs. The adaptor will sort of click into place on the o ring and shouldn't fall off. My Tempest uses the second adaptor from the right in your picture.
What Tailfin did you go for? Mine is the Aeropack S and had been great.

Why do two of the adapters taper while two are flat?
Not sure, I've just checked and I seem to only have a shorter non tapered spare.
