I've been doing some longer rides recently, off road, bridleways, lanes etc. and after suffering my first proper bonk (lol), started snacking on jelly beans after the first hour.

I'm also eating a fair bit of mud - after the faff of taking off a glove, riding the bike one or no-handed through pot-holes and trying to fish out a couple of jelly beans from my pocket or top-tube bag, I rarely get a delicious snack without at least some dirt on it.

Jelly beans suit me fine, I don't want to be buying expensive gels, but i'm hoping theres some kind of dispenser I can use without taking gloves off etc.?

Any suggestions?

Tic Tac box?

Jelly beans are really emergency supplies, you should be fuelling properly with better food.

a treat ball for cats would work

I'd suggest staying away from pure sugar sweets. It will do you no favours long term.

If you riding is relaxed then real food may work, on long all day xc rides pork pies, malt loaf and the like are all good (any convenience food really).

If I was planning on going for it and didn't want to break my rhythm on a training ride then I would just eat cereal bars. Have a wander into a supermarket and see what is on offer. Nakd, Nutrigrain, nature valley or own brand things. Still mostly sugar for a boost but a few more complex carbs.

Answering you original question though, pez? Or those long cable sweets - like they had in the car on waynes world

Will a jelly bean fit through a straw?

Cat treat ball wins - genius!

I get what you mean about the pure sugar, seems to work though, for quick-release carbs.

For a properly long ride i'll be munching on flapjacks and cereal bars etc., to at least have some proper food mixed up in the sugar.

Those chalk bag 'fuel pod' bags bikepackers tie to their bars with elasticsted openings, it's not quite mud free as you have to take a (muddy) glove off to avoid filling the bag with mud each time, but it's 95% effective.

The best solution though is something a bit less instant than jelly babies which need to be eaten constantly t drip feed sugar to your muscles. Flapjack on the other hand sits in your digestive system slowly releasing sugar. Not so great if you've bonked, but will stop it in the first place.

[edit] crossed with your own post

@Bez

If you integrate a heating element to liquify them? Would also keep head toasty on cold days...

+ a million, rather than trying to devise a solution for getting at your emergency supplies easily, look for a solution that means you don't need the emergency supplies. Then if you do the mild inconvenience is also an opportunity for a brief rest stop.

Get onto One-Up Components and ask them to do EDC add-on for PEZ!

I've just spent ages creating this detailed mockup - so that you can patent it.

You can make your millions - I just ask for a lifetime's supply of PEZ in return.

I know you said no gels but i like the ease of use from shotblox.

Less mess and faff and they're easy enough to eat with gloves on.

As someone who's managed to eat four family sized packets of jelly babies in a day 😯 I might not be the best person to give advice! (I could only manage 2hrs sleep a night for the next week)

Something vaguely decent food wise in a fuel cell/stem cell type bag. The Apidura feed bag has one handed opening and closing.

Alpkit stem-cell or similar and have half a dozen pepperamis and equal measure of red liquorice sticks. Alternate between them every half hour or so.
