What are the cool kids using? Running swampthings atm. Cheers Dm.
I used Swampies a bit, concluded they were a bit rubbish... Decent in slop, poor at everything else. Haven't used Marys though I gather they're designed as an intermediate tyre rather than a mud tyre.
Conti Baron is what I'd recommend, if you want a hard-use wet conditions tyre and you don't fancy dualply. Very nearly as good as a Swampy in the proper mud, and miles better everywhere else. Pricey, though.
Been using super tacky swamp things all winter, like normal. And I think they are great. They were fantastic in a bone dry peak district really grippy on the rocks. Great tyres but I am on my usual, rest of the year righ roller/larson combo now.
Quite a lot of riders up here in wet/muddy NE Scotland use the swampthing front as do several talented riders I know in T'Lakes. I personally really like the 2.35 ST for the front of my 150mm bike in mixed conditions, those typical spring time (ie winter!) rides that have a bit of everything going on.
Don't get on with the 2.5 ones I tried on my DH bike for some reason, think it's the difference in speed between the 2 bikes.
Not tried muddy mary's or barons but would like to as well as the offerings from specialized and bontrager.
Muddy Mary's not the out-and-out mud tyre that the Swampthing is - that's the Dirty Dan.

Sorry to burst your bubble there, but the mud tyre in the Maxxis range is the Wet Scream. The Muddy Mary and Swampthing are very much comparable (I have both here) but I'd only put the Schwalbe on my bike (proper edge nobs, squarer shape)
Used both and prefer the swampthings for muddy conditions. I think supertackies front and rear are actually not a bad all year round UK tyre (just alter tyre pressure a little to suit conditions.
Not overly impressed with the muddy marys. Certainly not as good as swampthings in muddy stuff, not even as good as minions in the mud either IMO. I had a gooey on front and 3C on the back. The gooey wears in no time and the 3c was very hard but the compounds have changed now.
They just didn't seem to hug the terrain the way maxxis do.
Forget both and fit Barons
Always use Swampthings in the winter. ST up front but normal on the rear. They are great in mud and are pretty good on sand too. Very draggy on tarmac though.
