Bought some Element something or other wheels a while back. Fitted new tyres etc yesterday. The freehub came with a spacer, I was fitting a SRAM 12 speed cassette onto the Shimano freehub and assumed I didn't need the spacer, however on fitting I needed to adjust stops on rear mech or it would shift off the bottom of smallest cog which I though a bit weird. Took it for a quick test ride and sure enough cassette rattled loose. So I presume I need the spacer, tried it despite me expecting it to mean the nut wouldn't grip it does, so is this usual? Am I doing it right? The old wheel (some planet x tank wheel that came with my Whippet) did not have a spacer

The freehub is road 11 speed standard, you need the spacer to use an MTB 11/12 speed HG cassette
