[Closed] Superstar single speed hub - anyone use one?

wanting to get a single speed wheel build, and although I'd prefer a Hope/717 build, the Superstar components SS hub or ready built wheel seems very hard to ignore for the price.

anyone out there use one? - are the seals any good? (I've heard bad things about their older design hub seals)

Contrary to popular STW belief....and risking octopus threads....

I have had a front hub off them and it lasted about 9 months. Not bad considering I rode my bike twice a week to work and once a week average off road proper like followed by a week in Les Gets / Morzine. Considering its cost (£20?) and that I was trying to learn to wheelie for many of those months and so repeatedly dropping hard onto the front wheel as many times as I could physically manage during my lunch hour or on the quieter roads on the way to work.

When the bearings started looking like they had a bit of play in them i just bought another one of their hubs and made my front wheel again.

true a Hope hub might have lasted longer but for the money I've paid..... I can't complain. i could also have just changed the bearings but it just seemed easier (and not much dearer) to buy a new one.

When this one finally goes, I'd buy another.

Its the 20mm hub i have BTW but guess its from the same factory.

what I'm worried about is the seal on the freehub. since it seems their older hub design was susceptible to grit getting past the seals and causing the freehub to spin freely - the wrong way - i.e. not engaging the drive teeth.

I dont use one but have been considering a set of the SS wheels. Look a bargain. Also be interested in seeing what people have to say about the wheels or hubs too.

so it seems either Superstar is still a name to shun on STW and thus publicly owning up to owning your Superstar kit is a fate worse than death. 😳

or

you wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. 👿

or ❓

well, if you want a dedicated ss hub for a screw on fw then the on-one one is superb IMHO. lasts well and is easy to service with easily sourced cart bearings.
if you want a regular freewheel/spacer kit then the p-x one is good, again easily serviced with easily available cart bearings, and crc have the complete freewheel for 12 quid. otherwise use whatever takes your fancy?

oh, if you're asking about octopron, it would be the middle one for me.

well I've gone an done it now! - just ordered myself one (SS 320-4 Pro Hub) to build up next week - and either i'll live to regret it, or I'll be pleasantly surprised.

I did eMail them and asked about serviceability and spare parts, and was impressed by the prompt and useul response I received. he sent me a copy of the service guide with pictures n'all. - the bearings are standard off the shelf units, 6001 2RS, and it all seams pretty much standard design with little to go wrong.

I'll report back on this investment later.
