Got the blackspire stinger copy on my heckler with an SLX double. To get it to work in teh granny ring i have had to bend the back plate - otherwise it rides up on top of the roller edge.

This works fine when pedaling forwards, but back pedal and the chain derails, it also comes off if i change to an easier gear at the back if in the granny ring at teh front (when under pressure)

What have i done wrong or are they just shite?

Are you sure you don't need to put some spacers (little washers) between your ISCG mount and the guide to get it aligned properly? I've had to do this to Superstar and E-thirteen chainguides on my hardtail frame whereas on my old full suss they were both fine - problem wasn't being caused by the guides.

that would push it the wrong way - its as if its designed for 68mm bb shells and mine is a 73mm so i only need one spacer on the drive side - this is the back plate of the (non isg) chainmount

the granny cog needs to be about 3mm further out for it to run right

i bent mine slightly in a flattened s shape, moved the roller in board by about 3 -5 mm

Mines a BB mount with the roller at about 7'oclock on an orange five.

Since fitting i've had zero chain drops, thats including back peddling, jumps, downhill, normal trails

It sounds like it just needs a bit more setting up.

I had to bend my backplate on my old stinger so not just a superstar issue, i think that was on my old Five, not much to fine tune on a bb mounted device like this unfortunately.

Eh? If it's the same as a Stinger the chain is meant to be up on the inner "ledge" of the roller when in granny ring and in the "groove" when in middle. If you're trying to make the chain sit in the groove when in granny ring you're doing it wrong!

^ That's a good point - try taking the roller off and flipping it round?

Ah - actually I've just looked at the pic of the superstars one and the roller is different. No idea how that could possibly work properly with a granny ring.

It's basically shit. I would bin it and get a proper stinger 🙂

On my stinger i bent the backplate a bit to stop it rubbing on the backplate as much not to stop it running on the stepped bit of the roller,it's designed to do that, i presume the ss one is the same.

No the SS one doesn't have a proper stepped bit that the chain can run on! Tut.

You don't need a chain device when you're in the granny ring.

When you're going downhill and therefore likely to bounce the chain off, you'll be in the middle/big ring.

So all you need to do is make sure it's out of the way when you shift to granny.

Using one on my other half's Spicy, no problems but I did have to play around a bit with the supplied washers to get the setup just right.

Hmmm! You can't have it out of the way in granny without bending it. They are supposed to be designed to work with double chainsets, hence the stepped roller on the Stinger.

What I mean is that the setup in Granny ring is irrelevant. If it rides up on top of the roller edge, who cares?

Looking at my mrs' bike (it's parked next to the PC!) her's does that too. It's not a problem. To be honest, I wasn't even sure that it wasn't supposed to be like that (sort of a stepped roller)!

It's supposed to ride up on the roller edge. The problem is just that the SS one doesn't look like the roller is properly designed for that. The Stinger has a wider edge that the chain can sit nicely on rather than trying to slip back down into the groove which I imagine is what would happen with the SS one, from looking at the pic.

mr_mills you are spot on with your assumptions.
I know its not needed in granny but as its for a dual ring i want it to work

So if I were you I would get a stinger roller from CRC and fit it to the SS plate.

Also I would use some threadlock when you bolt the roller on. Mine unscrewed itself the other day and jumped off.

I've got one on a 73mm BB shell bike - same experience as what stevo said.

Can you rotate it down a bit so chain is not in contact with it when you're in the granny?

i run a superstar double on my HT with no problems, and run a stinger on the full suss, the only real difference that i could tell was the stinger stung me a fiver more.. both work just as well as one another
