[Closed] SunRace 11-50 cassette mech advice needed

Planning on converting to 1x11 using one of these cassettes as I could run a 34 ring up front for a nice spread of gears and I'm wondering what's the best mech to fit?

Would a Shimano XT long cage work with a 50 tooth sprocket or would jiggery pokery be required?

GS shimano XT should work as it has a 39T capacity but when I tried it on my Aeris  with a fake goatlink (£2.99 ebay jobbie) it was getting to the 50T okay but was hitting the seatstay before the 11T. I wouldnt run a mech at it's capacity limit on a full susser so have gone Eagle GX on the Aeris now.

I would think a long cage SGS should work absolutely fine and probably a safer bet but you may need a goat link or one of the cages with a greater top jockey offset to make it work. It's only slightly bigger than the 46T that shimano sell so it should be fine and even a GS should work (technically) on a hard tail as it definitely does on a 46T.

@catfood I’ve been preparing Wil’s review for publication today. Just waiting on an answer and it’ll go live - hopefully tomorrow. He’s tested it with a few set ups so I think your question will be answered!

On an older full suss, (prophet), hmmm, may play safe and go 11-46 with a 32 up front on GS mech. 34 on an 11-50 would give me exactly the same spread of gears as I have now, which I know is all I'll ever need, which is why I'm hoping it'll work.

@stwhannah, just seen this, thanks, I'll have a look tomorrow, thanks for replies from others too, seems a bit of a minefield on the outer limits.

SRAM mech and it'll work out of the box with no magic bodges.

I’ve been running a sunrace 11-50 since last autumn. Using an XT SGS and it’s been flawless. No need for a goat link or anything.

I stuck a NX long cage mech with one of these on my daughter's new whip (she insists i call it that, but she's 9) It works fine,  just with a hint of entry level sram clunkiness.

If you want to use Shimano you can use a One Up shark cage on either an SLX or XT derailleur. Alternatively the Wokf Tooth make a similar cage, but it only fits XT. Wolf Tooth say the 11 speed goat link isn't recommended for a 50 tooth sprocket.

I think that Sunrace make a goat link type of adapter for use with Shimano derailleur sand their 11-50 cassette.

If you are starting from scratch, sram is probably the cheaper option.

Another running long cage XT with no extra bits and flawless on my soul 26 winter build 1x11. A sweet and simple upgrade for my setup.

The article on the home page about this is very interesting, thanks for the heads up stwhannah, reckons a Shimano medium cage is the best way to go with this cassette.
