Have always run Shimano disc brakes LX & SLX.

Looking at getting some brakes for a new build and curiosity has got me thinking about getting something other than Shimano.

So what does the STW massive recommend? Hope / Magura / Avid?

Cheers

Magura for me best balance of feel and power
Avid always seem a bit tempramental
Hope are nice and user freindly to work with and most like conventional automotive brakes so easy to work with from that point of view so would be second choice for me

I say stick with them, XTs here and after a few pairs of - admittedly low end - Avids I am far too happy to change. Heard very good things about the new XTRs too which I think look the part and seem pretty light.

XT on one bike and Avid Elixir 5 on the other bike (also had some Avid Juicy Ultimates in the past). If I was buying brakes tomorrow, I'd get XT.

I'd always go Shimano. I just like 'em and they work so well. My SLX's in the Alps last year where just awesome. Hopes, have bad memories and have been put off them for life brake wise IMO.

+1 shimano - also consider their splined rotor for your hubs (i got SLX) if building all the way from scratch

The new Deore M595s are very good (and affordable) if you decide to stick with Shimano.

I'm probably just going BB7s (not with the stock discs though) on the xc build I'm starting to plan in my head! Great stopping power, cheap and no faff with fluid.

Pretty similar to other threads - have a search.

I'll put my standard response in which is Hope Tech X2. Plently of power, great modulation, light, easy to set up, easy to maintain, great support, look good (especially with the floating rotors), colour match the bits to your bike, British. What's not to like?

When they stop working in The Alps. But the old school black and gold M4/Mono combination I'll admit. Never forgiven though! ๐Ÿ˜ก

Hope, because in 15 years time you'll still have them, and hope will still sell you (or even just give you!) spare parts.

Shimano because they're cheep, although my rear now has a small leak (drawing water in not leaking fluid out) and you can't get replacement seals. I've never been overwhelmed by their power though.

Avid and Magura seem to have the most power by a country mile, but if anyone in the group has a problem brake, invariably it seems to be Avid or Magura.

Having had numerous sets of Avids (Juicy Carbons, Ultimates, Elixir CRs and XXs) I've now got the new XTR Race brakes and they're awesome, incredibly easy to set up, fantastic lever feel and reliable.

I'd stick with Shimano.
