Reluctantjumper.
Is that pic of your Trek take in The Black mountains?
Bridge looks familiar.

Yes, I grew up there so know the riding well. It's the bridge across the Grwyne Fechan stream before the long, grassy climb to the saddle between Mynydd Llysiau and Pen Trumau.

2001

Pretty sure I was riding around on one of these but with Judy XC forks having just got back into riding after playing "team sports" at Uni:

Now I'm riding this:

Similar but better in every conceivable way aside from weight and "spring".

Then, C16-R (mine was silver with orange decals and full STX-RC group)

Now

@ElShalimo there was a Sub-5 and a F700 Cannondale in between, so not all hard-tail

Back in 2001 I was riding a 1999 Specialized Hardrock Cromo, the absolute base spec that I tarted up over time. I'd still have it if some bugger hadn't stolen in in 2008.

Apparently I needed a lot of gear to get round a 30 mile ride back then:

Now I mainly ride an Evil-

and a Trek Stache, and I still strap a number plate on occassionally-

OOh, that Klein. In the whop where I bought my Claud Butler from, there was a Klein Attitude Comp in the blue with the smooth welds. I sooo wanted that.

And I know that second spot well 😀

I was riding a 1994 Kona Kilauea (as reviewed in Mtb Pro) which I still own. That summer I did ride the Berwyn's ride in edition 1 just after foot and mouth restrictions. I remember some of the farmers 'forgettng' too remove the no admittance signs. Not sure if I have any pics that far back as I was still using film - and you did not need to prove you had been out.

followed by a 92 Kona Cinder Cone

Then a Kona Kula

Kona King Supreme

Kona Kilauea

Santa Cruz Superlight

The latest is the Tallboy 3

Still have the Kula, Kilauea and the Cinder cone frame & forks

2001, I went from an Orange 02 With a few spangly bits on it (Cook Bros dog bone cranks, rental sub 130 bars, king front hub, machine tech rear hub, canal boat tiller length pace stem) to first gen Yeti ASR. Still have both, the Orange doing duties on the turbo trainer and the Yeti in the inlaws garage in Texas so I have bike to ride when we visit them.

Now, the main bikes are an 2016 Orbea Rallon and 2018 carbon Bombtrack carbon gravel bike.

2001 Dekerf team sl with fox van125 forks fitted a few months later. It was just when fox launched over here and they felt amazingly plush after rockshox judy.

2021 Orange Alpine 160, pretty old but I really like it, and it’s still a lot quicker than I am.

Back then I had an Orange/black Diamondback Sorrento with terrible forks, XT brakes, 1 Mavic rim, WTB Velociraptors and a pimping 24/7 50mm stem with Wide (690mm) Tioga riser bars. It’s still at my parents and works.

In between I had a GT Moto jump bike, Mongoose Black Diamond Triple, Commencal Meta 55 & Mini DH, Kona Howler, and an Orange Alpine.

Now I have a Calibre Line 29 bought as a stopgap while I raise young twins but will probably keep and gradually upgrade as the frame is actually really nice with a decent ride and good geometry.

2001: BSO £100 Makro special bought by my parents. I was 16 and hated bikes.

2021

And when the new frame arrives next week (fingers crossed), this in matt navy with dream build

And currently this for gravel, but new Niner RLT frame on order and new wheels in the cellar ready to move everything over

I have literally just cracked it using Google Photos! It’s my main achievement for the year!

Have written up what I did in the chat forum.

20 years ago would be 2001. That bike is still in my shed and is my older son's commuter/general use bike now. Bought in 1999 I think.

Lovely Schwinn Homegrown USA, racy geometry and light as a feather when new. Now a frame built up from odds and ends that's a little heavier but functional.

For best/bigger rides he's pinched his mum's Gary Fisher which would be 2006 vintage.

Only thing I've got older than that is a muddy fox hybrid from about 1992, that really is a banged up heap now though.

In 2001 I was riding this Specialized FSR Ground Control Comp, which still hangs on my garage wall

Now I’m riding this

And a 456c and a Giant Revolt 0, which has recently replaced my Arkose.

(Never been worried about riding pretty bikes)

I was "between mountain biking"- did it in the 90s, stopped for a long time, started again about 12 years ago. So it'd have been one of these, but really just commuting and occasional canal paths and such

https://webimg.secondhandapp.com/w-i-mgl/5ada11ed437dcd5ade9d1291 WITH FLEXSTEM!

(just idly googling and apparently it was in MBUK's top 10 bikes of the year, in 1989. ****ing flexstems though)

Still had this til about 3 years ago, commuted on it for about 2 decades then gave it away.

2000 rockhopper with 63mm rockshox Judy forks, bought new at Hardisty cycles in Newcastle, now Edinburgh coop. Blue and white frame. I'll have a pic somewhere.

Would still have it if some scroat hadn't nicked it and a subsequent stumpy fsr out my garage.

The frame and forks are still hanging in the garage, I might get round to rebuilding it one day!

A Dave Hinde Dragon, (yeah, THAT Dave Hinde) with AMP research forks. My daughter was one so it wasn't seeing much action.

Still doing good duty as my uncle's pub bike, without the forks.

No photos sadly.

Some great photos and bikes in this.

Here's my contribution.

In 1999 I finally bought the frame I'd always lusted over.

After only a few months, I had a go on my mates Heckler and ended up with this.

The superlight frame cracked in 2007 and got the newer design on the crash replacement scheme. Still got the frame and kit to make a bike - should do it.

And now, have these two plus a new Carbon On One Whippet that doesn't have any pictures of its current form.
