[Closed] Steel 29ers.... show off your builds

I've just taken delivery of a Salsa El Mar frame but as I have limited bike building funds at the moment I thought some of you might want to show off your similar builds and give me inspiration for how to build up my frame. I'm thinking 1x10 at first w/suspension but want to try out ss rigid down the line too.

A nice start to the thread there. I really like your Fortitude, is that a 3.0 front tyre and the widest (2.4 maybe?) one you could fit out back?

Here is my El Mar, half way down Jacob's ladder with its summer gears on. It also did 2 laps of Coedy yesterday!

None are mine but these are giving me the inspiration to keep looking for the "perfect" one... yes I have a weakness for a racey steel frame with a Lefty! 😀 Always love seeing pics of yours LMTTM

Amaro....

Cyclo...

Not steel as far as I am aware but same trend 😀

Yes, well sort of ..... 3.0 up front, but a wide 2.1'' on a Flow rim out back.

SIR.9 in summer mode with some old Rebas & 33x18 SS.

Winter mode means Niner steel rigids, but the rest stays the same.

Lovely, lovely bike.

Any of these frames have XC geometry as apposed to being more more trail orientated?

Something built around 100mm not 120+

My Solaris is on 100mm forks. Not sure I'd say totally xc set up, more just set up for the riding I do.

Am interested in building a fairly light 29er for general xc duties, 100 to 120 fork with a solid fork for touring. Whats your recommendations? Please.

I can't take any credit for that ; they're very clever guys down at Curtis - do a sterling job and are meticulous in helping you to get the right specification.

I do know that clear powdercoat will, eventually, allow the steel to superficially rust in a year or two. I'm minded to allow it just to look 'antique', although there's always the option of the shotblast and re-coat.

I'm calling digga's Curtis as thread winner so far (obviously I can't vote for my own bike).

More pics and info please digga

Embarrassed to say I was going to call the Canfield mine. We should just get a room, with the bikes of course.

Gary at Curtis patiently adapted the front triangle tube lengths and angles of their AM29 to suit my measurements which I'd derived from my ORange Clockwork 29er, adding a slightly bigger downtube than usual for the odd jump to be enjoyed the better. He took his own, tighter rear triangle geo and then worked his magic sticking it all together. Works fab.

The rest is fairly standard spec, lots of Hope bits - very pleased with the (2012 model price-reduced from CRC) RockShox Revelations though.

It was originally intended for general singletrack trogging about and winter use, but has proved it's mettle on fast, jumpy manmade stuff.

Only got crap pics:

@digga I looked at the Curtis a while ago, but the shorter chain stays of Canfield (and the chrome of this year's N9 too) swung it for me.

But your steel finish was a very good choice, and that bike remains on my list! Beautiful bike.

@mattjg
IIRC Gary told me the Curtis chainstays were 440mm - it really doesn't look like there's much shorter to go! What do yours measure?

The geo chart says the range is 413 to 429, I guess they're about 420 in the pic. I have a Yelli Screamy too which is 424mm.

I doubt I'd have bought the N9 (they ain't cheap) unless I was already sold on the geometry from the Yelli.

I don't think stays can go shorter than the Curtis, and still have clearance, unless the seat tube is bent (N9) or welded well forwards of the BB (Yelli).

Well between that Nimble and the Curtis my plan to sell my FS and build a HT around a cheapo frame is looking distinctly remote.

Both look ACE.

@MussEd my N9 is something of an unjustifiable indulgence, a 29er Inbred is cheap as chips and a great frame too
