As per title - the trigger on my 9-spd shifter doesn't spring back automatically after down-shifting. It will return - but I have to do it manually. I've got into the habit of flicking it back with my thumb after shifting, but would like it to work properly again.
Any ideas how to cure?
Cheers,
BTM
Change the cables. Water has gone in. Lube them too.
/\ makes no difference at all as the lever return is not affected by cable tension.
They have a nasty habit of doing this.If you have infinite patience and dexterity you can rebuild them....and they work properly again for a bit.
Never had the time or inclination to find out why they go north.
[LBS mechanic trick]
Pop the cable change cover grommet off, insert straw of GT85 can and give it a GOOD LONG SQUIRT until GT85 drips out of the shifter. 10-15 secs of squirt should do.
Try shifting repeatedly
Repeat if necessary
If that won;t fix it, you'll have to buy a new one

It's quite staggering how many shifters I've 'fixed' like that. 🙂
My 10 speed X9 shifters keep on doing this. I took the most recent one apart and it was full of crusty dirt! I flushed it out, lubed it up and rebuilt it and it works fine (although the action is a bit lighter than it was). Rebuilding them can try your patience a bit though.
Cheers all, I'll try the GT85 method as I know for a fact attempting a strip and rebuild will result in a jar full of tiny little bits that don't fit together.
Yeah, mine did this - GT85 alleviated it and 2x full strip down & clean prolonged life by about 2 months.
The permanent solution is, however, far simpler... Shimano.
They're not that bad to strip. Just be careful and take note of where the springs etc go.
The current stuff doesn't seem nearly as well made as the earlier shifters (my second gen X9 shifters are still going strong as my X0 mech). I've just bought an X0 shifter in the hope that it may last a bit longer....if not, I'll be buying a Saint shifter and a Zee mech.
I've had my X7 LH shifter apart a couple of times for this problem, it's a very time consuming job and took multiple attempts to get the cover back on with all the efin springs in the right place. If you'd rather just spend the money on a new one rather than a couple of hours frustration then get a new one.
My left hand shifter did this once, tried gt85 routine, no good, ended up stripping it all down, turned out the cast cam had broke. Quite a common occurrence apparently, now running shimano as spares are as common as rocking horse manure.
I have a SRAM shifter that's just like this (X7 I think). Taken it apart numerous times, cleaned, lubed etc. It always seemed like I'd fixed it until it was completely back together, then it just stuck again. My thinking is that the return spring loses it's spring over time.
Bought another instead, might go shimano in future, but that means changing rear mech too, plus other bikes are all SRAM geared so swapping stuff is easy.
If you'd been riding a Yeti Sb66 my advice would have been to not bother selling it on here..
2 year warranty on Sram and it's a known problem and Sram warranty are brilliant . Send it back if it's not too old .
A simple fix is toot screw the lid on too tight on the shifter. Sounds too simple but that used to be a problem on some X9's I had years ago. Leave it really lightly screwed on
