i know that a sram rear mech will not work with a shimano shifter, but how about a sram x9 front mech. anyone?

AFAIK front mechs and shifters are interchangeable. As long as they're both MTB or both ROAD, that is.

YES only rear are different fronts are the same and you can use theoretically use a road one if you wanted but they are almost all bottom pull and dont fit as the tubes are smaller.
