Obviously you can't get a schraeder through a presta hole... but you can get a Presta through the larger hole..

But is it ok ?

Reason i ask is that my Hope/Crests have Presta, my new Commencal wheels don't. I could drill out the Hopes i guess... but i have about 8 Presta 29er tubes...

So thought i'd ask if it's OK and works fine ?

Fine. You can get valve reducers if you're bothered but they're not really needed.

yes.

mavic wheels come with a plastic grommet which you may be able to find to make it look neater.

I just tighten the lock ring up and it works fine.

If you tighten the little nut up nice and tight it shouldn't be a problem, I've done this the odd time in the past.

Ditch the tubes and go tubeless though.

Thanks guys. 🙂

As for the tubeless debate.. i'm still not sold on that idea... but that's for another/many other threads.

Cheers.

This.

Also if you've got Crests why not go tubeless?

EDIT: too slow!

Yes, they run fine without grommets or reducers, though when I removed my tyre yesterday I noticed that they do let in water and mud as it was wet and muddy around the base of the valve extending all the way round the inner tube and to the rim.

Been using Presta valves in Schraeder drilled rims for over 20 years. I can count on the toes on both hands exactly how many times it's caused a problem.

Valve hole reducers can be found on eBay for about a quid. Very rarely have problems when not using them though.

That would mean drilling my Crests!

Exactly, that's why tubeless is the way forward!

+1 for going tubeless with your Crests. And I use the Mavic rubber grommets to make presta valved tubes a better fit in my old Alex rims. They're about £3 for a pack of 10

TBH i worry about tubeless, mostly i guess through inexperience and lack of real world knowledge. I have this perception that i still need to carry a tube 'just in case' and would have a nightmare getting it to seat properly and seal with a trail pump.

plus the proper tyres cost twice as much.

Is a good point... was just looking at rubber this morning actually. On-one doing Maxxis Crossmark for £17 each for 29er wheels, which is really really good.

You do, but why is this a problem?

I don't bother if I'm going for a short, local ride.

That's why you carry a tube just in case.

Well, surely the beneifts of tubless are more than 1....

Weight on wheel
Weight on bike/camelbak
Puncture resistance

But if you get a puncture you're then having to mess about with goo all over the place, mess about trying to clean out your tyre and then fit a tube covered in sticky goo.

I'm guessing it's partly one of those things you really have to try to appreciate.

This would only be on my Hope/Crest summer wheel combo as i doubt the standard wheels on the Meta AM2 come tubeless ready.
