I thought XTs weren't supposed to be too bad because of the spider/carrier?

however:

someone (kaesae?) suggested jamming a couple of coins under the cassette lockring & using the lockring to "push" the cassette off the freehub

then someone else said it didn't work & caused damage

then there was a looong bitchathon

(I'd pull cassette & freehub off the hub, then support the rear of cassette (but not freehub) & persuade the freehub out with a mallet)

Sorry, seem to have been a bit of a 'tard and double posted. Not sure how to descirbe this....or if I am going to be using the right terms.

Cassette has a main body/carrier then 4 separate rings that kind of sit on top to make the whole cassette. The 4 separate ones appear to have chewed into the freehub body, and it was these that were preventing the whole thing coming off.

Is this normal?

It is, but don't worry, Hope say it's only cosmetic ๐Ÿ™„

I've found using a chainwhip to pull the stuck sprocket in the opposite direction can do the job nicely, especially if combined with a wee bit of screwdriver action to encourage it off. Once off, you might want to get into the hub with a file and a bit of chemical metal to reshape it, I wasn't sure if this would work at all but it's bearing up OK on my traversees.

I use a big screwdriver from the other side of the wheel and tap the back of the cassette a couple of times

+2 for the chain whip. I did however once have to shock it off with a soft hammer getting hit off the outside of the cassette when it was really bad. I find lots of grease on the outside to the free gub when fitting cassette really helps this.

Tune ones are even worse for it. Bit of wiggling usually does the trick. Before putting it back on though use a file to gently remove any burrs.
