Just been switching my El Mariachi over to single speed from 1 by 10 and when I came to take the chainring off discovered that one of the four arms where the chainring bolts onto has broken. The bit with the bolt hole has snapped right off. (Could well explain the creak I've been unable to trace over the last few rides).

The current chain set is an SLX 675, but I've always run it as single ring not a double. Any suggestions for a single ring setup specific crank set that will work with my standard BB and collection of 104 BCD chainrings?

another set of slx?
not the new ( 8000 ) ones though as they've gone to the asymmetric bolt arrangement.

Don't really want to run another set of SLX if I can help it. I am seeing this as an opertunity to pimp the bike a bit.

Raceface Aeffect will run on your existing BB , but allow you into the new world of direct mount rings. Cheap, light, well made.

The new SLX chainsets look quite s****y IMO, happily put one on my new build.

keep the crank - only reason I went to XT from an SLX was to get a 165mm crank.

My Canyon Dude came with Raceface Aeffect cranks. Apart from needing to buy a puller, which was slightly different to the one I already had 👿 I can't really fault them

I am tempted by the Aeffect from Raceface, need to see how cheaply I can get the cranks, a 104 BCD spider and by the sound of it a crank puller.

Are Aeffect different fitting from Turbine then?
Just need an 8mm allen key for Turbines. Only tool I've had to buy is a lock ring/ISIS BB tool to install the direct mount ring (or spider). (£3.25 off ebay)

Yes, the Aeffect don't have the "self extracting" bolt (and the crank puller is the ISIS type rather that the Shimano one I already had). My Shimano BB tool was fine for changing the direct mount ring though.

Ah, so op would just need that £3.25 off of ebay tool to do both the lock ring and the pulling?
(No sorry, I don't mean that do I - the crank puller and the BB tool are 2 different things. duh, sorry)

The Raceface Aeffect is part of “The People’s Liberation Drivetrain” - the AK-47 of the 1×11 drivetrain world.

Nice little article.

I've got a raceface Aeffect crank, I don't need a crank puller for it, it uses two different size allen keys(can't remember what size) and the nuts tighten against each other to remove it.

I can' fault the crank, really like it, and it works with the standard shimano BB's.

Maybe they've changed it, or maybe you only need the crank puller for the fatbike version. It's not a big deal really. i think the tool was less than a fiver, but it would be good if they include the self extracting bolts now.

The Raceface Aeffect is part of “The People’s Liberation Drivetrain”

(As roverpig says) says on there the puller bolt is extra. Odd.
But yeah, worth it. T
