grangers do a good 2in1 wash and proofer.
make sure your washing machine is clear of all detergent scum, best to do a service wash first.
Also, you'll need to tumble-dry to activate the proofing.

Bin?

I know that sounds terrible...

... and I have used the Nikwax wash and "re-proof" stuff, but doesn't that just reinstate the surface beading properties of the external fabric.

I was always under the impression that once the goretex membrane had failed the jacket was pretty much shot ๐Ÿ™

if you haven't got a dryer a warm iron is recommended, not too hot tho

The Goretex membrane seldom fails, but the dwr coating of the outer skin wears / washes (eventually) away and causes the outer to wet out. Water deosn't get through, but the breathability is compromised.
I've just done my old faithful ( ten year old) Berghaus / Goretex walking jacket again and washed it by hand in TX10, hung it on a hanger on the line to dry in the sun ( if you can find any) . Water just beads up and rolls off just like new.
EDIT; I have also done the same with Endura Humvee shorts, which, whilst not fully waterproofing them, gives a lot of water resistance.
