...If I set one up fairly close to the top of the chain, do I really need something on the outside?

I'd rather not have a mech type thing, mainly cos they're £25 and weigh the same as an xtr front mech, of which I'll keep on if that's the case.

I could use a bb mounted roller at a guess?

Or I could bodge one using some stuff, like a roller and a clamp, a long bolt and some aluminium nylok nuts?

I think mamadirt bodged one and I recall someone bodging something out of that metal strapping..

ideas?

I think my budget is about £10.

i use one, its called a jumpstop or something like that, its ace, works ten times better than my truvativ box guide did, and the one time it has slipped off its easier to put back on. definately would recomend, and depending on your chainring you will need to use a bash ring.

cool.

I'm using an unramped FSA ring at the moment, seems to have fairly deep teeth so hopefully will work without a bash. I'll take a couple more links out of the chain too.
